On my way to work today, I came to a stop sign. Put the car into first and began to make my right hand turn. When I completed the turn I heard a clunk noise, like I ran over something, and the stick popped out of first gear. So I put it into second, and hit the gas, the rpm's just raised and the car went no where.

I pulled over to the side, put the gear into first and tried to go again. Nothing, rpm's raised and the car went nowhere. I tried this with every gear and nothing happened. The car starts right up, so it is not a clutch problem. I can put the shifter into gear and let my foot off the clutch, no stalling out or anything.

What I am thinking is that I broke the shift linkage, but I may be wrong. Anything else that this could be? Thanks

well its getting trailered by my buddy to my house, so I guess I will figure it out when I go to get it. I am guessing shift linkage. Thanks for the help

It could very well be the axle now that I have thought about it. What I am thinking is that I popped the axle out of the transmission somehow, and it would cause my car not to move. It will be the first thing i check out. Thanks for the input.

 

hmm... my crx did this, turned out the spider gears inside the tranny died, this probably isn't your problem though

sounds right to me, it happened to my friend while he was driving on the highway just last week.

 

huh, how can this not be a clutch problem? thats exactly what my moms civic did when the clutch went. if the shift linkage was broken or something it would feel like its not even going in gear because it would just be some dangling shift linkage

Werd up...sounds clutchy to me. The car starting has nothing to do with it really...if the clutch is stuck disengaged, it would start fine but not go anywhere.

If the axle popped out there would be tranny fluid everywhere. If the linkage was broke you would experience an extreme floppyness in the shifter.

The fact you say it goes into gear but does not drive makes me think tranny....

just some stoff to toss out there.

 

Well, I got the car up in the air today, and looked at the axle. Drivers side axle had popped out. So we took it out, and tried putting it back in, no luck. The teeth on the end of the axle had gotten chewed off from when it popped out. So I am hoping that it is the only problem and not anything to due with the clutch, since I just replaced that a month and a half ago. I will find out friday since I should have the parts in by then. The only thing that could really give me problems, is if inside the tranny the gears that spin the axle also broke.

yepp same thing. So are you saying that you had to buy a new tranny when your spider gears got messed up?

another question for everyone.. will hatchback axles fit my coupe?

its not ur tranny man, i wouldnt worry about that too much. if u get a new axel i can bet 95% that will fix ur issue. and yes all d-series axels will fit d-series motors and b-series go wth b-series.

thank you. 2 of my buddy's just went up to Rhode Island to pick up a hatchback, so I should have the axle today.

 

well when i took the tranny out a bunch of the pieces of spider gears fell out, i just got a new tranny, i suppose you could find a tranny with bad synchs or something and fix yours

yes it could very well have screwed up the spider gears, and I would be better off taking the tranny my friends are coming home with today, but I talked to a mechanic yesterday and he siad that I should be able to look in the whole, and see if the spider gears are messed up. If they are then its new tranny time, if not then I am going to be a happy camper. thanks

 

yeah hopefully nothing was destroyed, i don't think anything happened to my axle when this happened to me, so maybe your axle its just bad, but those teeth would have went somewhere i would definately look inside the hole before you put the new axle in

 

yeah for sure, drain the tranny fluid to get as many of teh shards out of there u can lol.
