Anyone know what the average cost is for replacing a headgasket on a d15 is, - labor costs? Also can I reuse the oem headstuds that are in the head now or would my best bet be to buy some new ones from honda and is resurfacing the head necessary, if so cost?

it all depends on where you take it but I'm GUESSING around $400 thats what we do them for roughly. You shouldent need to remachine the head if it isent warped it just needs to be cleaned with a scraper really well to get all the old material off. I would also go with an OEM honda gasket or a feelpro. As for the studs the shop I know reuses them all the time but I'd just get new ones those things stretch out so why risk it just to save a few bucks? ARP is what I'd get if it was my car along with a OEM gasket.

Then your looking at maybe $80 with studs? But that sounds high to me. The parts are really inexpensive and shouldent take you more then an afternoon if you have an idea of what your doing. Perhaps a day if you dont have any major proplems. Just take your time and do it right.

 

OEM headstuds are about 8.50 a piece, and you need like 10 of them, so you're looking at around 85-90 bucks for just the studs...

 

Dident know that I thought they were a LOT cheaper like $2 a piece.

Responding to your IM about removing the timing belt.

You need a Jackstand
A jack
Assorted metric sockets
Impact gun is VERY nice but not needed
Correct tool to remove the crank pully (Dont be halfassed just get the tool)
A helms would be nice too.
The marker trick is good if your gonna reuse it like you want. but why not get a new one if its not that old?

But by going from your post about replacing the headgasket you dont need to remove the crank pully. You would only need to do that if you want to swap out the water pump.

Sp I was preping for tomorrows work by removing the intake manifold and exhaust mani when all of a sudden the intake manifold starts leaking coolant near the thermostat on the block. Could this be the problem or do I still have a blown headgasket, I'm guessing the coolant is comeing from the hose on the IM but I could be wrong and probably am.

Sometimes the throttle body will have a coolant line that runs to it. Maybe thats where its coming from?

What made you think you had a bad headgasket to begin with? just out of curiosity. Usually its painfully apparent.

 

headgaskets arent always noticable

mine wasnt too much.. my coolant line foamed thats all.. nothing in the oil... nothing leaking from the engine

I thought it was the headgasket because d15 are from what I hear, known for blowing head gaskets and when I was driving around I could smell coolant once and a while. Also in the corners of the exhaust side where the block meets head, there is a watery type **** w/ crap on it so..........What else could it be?

 

Who said they are known for blowing headgaskets? 140,xxx and bone stock.

 

I'm at 172,XXX, I'm not too surprised that it's due.

 

Is your car pushing white smoke out the exhaust? has your coolant overflow tank dramatically filled up? Compression/Leakdown test could've given you better diagnosis. BTW you can't reuse OEM head bolts. Get an OEM headgasket. Some copper spray and get the head resurfaced. 170k for sure it could've warped somehow

 

Um, you dont have to remove all that crap, I took off the top timing belt cover, slid the belt off the cam gear, kept the intake mani on, took out fuel rail, disconnected it, took off exhaust mani, and I think that's it. Anyway, it's pretty easy, make sure you check timing when done and scrape off all the old gasket before putting on the new one, while you got the head off you might wanna pay about 20 and get it resurfaced.

 

tyler go to advance auto and just order a headgasket and do it yourself...just use your old headbolts..its not like that motor pushes 800whp...do it...

 

whether it pushes that amount of hp, it doesn't matter, old honda bolts are never recommended to be reused

to chance, or not to chance...there's always that question when you're working on your automobile...these headbolts are designed to be used only ONCE...it's not recommended to REuse them, but hey, people do anyways. Some get no problems...some have to do it all over again and pay more when they should've just done it right the first time...but it aint my car

Just get new headbolts...it's not like it's alot of $$$...you spend that much on gas in a week!
