Help me decide
I am a US Marine stationed in Japan, I am coming up on the end of my 3 year tour soon and I can't decide what to do with my R. In a perfect world I would like to bring it back with me, but since its gotten so hard and expensive that's probably out of the question (unless somebody has an easy "ligit" way to help me). I have also thought about buying a container and having the car shipped back as parts ie.. front clip. Or just selling the car...
I bought it for $3,500, I figure if I could sell it for $5,000 that would be a good turn around.
If anybody has different options I'm open for suggestions.
Thanks DaN

well if you parted it out and imported the parts here you'd make quite a bit of money. i would look at the cost of shipping the car intact though i believe there are issues concerning that. you could sell the vehicle here whole for quite a bit of money as well. or just import it as a racecar.
Shipping fees from Tokyo to a West Coast port (Oakland or Seattle) is going to run you around $1,800.00 US.
Depending on where you will be living, is going do depend heavily on how hard it will be to get that car legally registered. I know that where I used to live, they would register it with no problems. California is a No-No. For more details on the forms that you will need to fill out and the steps that you need to do, simply click on this link: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/
This is the Federal website. The DMV's in your state: http://www.dmv.org/ will then have their own rules that may branch off of the Federal Laws.
If you have another car to drive around state side, then there is no need to worry about this timely process of importation.
Hope this helps. You own the car already...

Going to be living in South Carolina, (Parris Island). I have always heard and read stories about how easy it is to get a car to the states, but once its there its hell to get registered and cleared through customs... crash tested, reinforced, ect. Not sure I want to put up with all that... Anyone moving to Okinawa Japan soon
get your CO to sign off that you have a car to ship back with you to the USA.
Bring the 5 copies of the orders to the nearest POV shipment location where you are, including military ID and fill out the HS-7 form.
Once its on the docks in the USA you have an option of registering it as a race/show vehicle direct (bypasses DOT restrictions), or you can get a 10 day temp license for the vehicle. Other than that...since the car isnt 25 years or older, you will be subject to all the usual gastapo crap associated with registering a non-US vehicle.
And If I didnt just quit my job with the DOD contractor who handled these cars, I would have asked you to ship back two cars, and i'd take care of the rest

The car was so cheap because the last person who had it was in the same postion as I am... when people leave island and wait till the last minute to sell their cars this is what happens. And I would say that 5-7000 is the going rate for a Type R, (from another american) but from a Japanese dealership, I don't know.
PS: the last owner was a girl and she new nothing about the car, used it a a daily driver... like it was a Buick Skylark or something.

if i were to re-enlist or go officer, i'd do the same thing. but that is if you are willing to do that. i would have to say that it is entirely up to you, whether you want to do that or not. i personally would have brought over as many cars as i could.
damn Tom, i thought you like that job @ the shipping company.

If I had the option of bringing it back legally as "255" mentioned due to your time in the service....why wouldn't you?
I'd certainly take advantage of that if I had that as an option. Keep it!
