Default Welding Rollcage to Chasis questions

ok.. here's the deal.. my friend asked me to weld his cage into his crx for him.. i've welded before and i can get a decent bead going... but i haven't welded a cage to a chasis before... just want to know the correct way of doing things... like if i need to know anything special have it pass inspection or something..

car is a crx, mild steel cage ( I think), i'll be using a Miller MIG welder....

any advice is

thanks

Well, first you need to verify that it is mild steel. If it is, your good to go. As for passing inspection or not....with NHRA, if all the bars are in the right place, they really cant give you **** about the welds....as long as there not like WHOA bad. If you say yuou can run a decent bead, thats fine. If it is an actual cage kit from a manufacturer, it is more than likely going to be legal. Just look at the rulebook for whatever you want to run, and make sure all the bars meet the specs, and are in the proper place.
After you have done this "homework", you are ready to begin. First thing you need to do is find where each tube will meet the floor. If it is a 4 point cage, there will be 4 points touching the floorboard, if its a 6-point, there will be 6 tubes touching the floorboards...etc.
After you locate where each piece meets the floorboard, you need to cut plates....usually 6x6 inches I believe. You will then weld these to the floorboard itself, and the your base tubes will be welded to these.
After this, it is pretty self-explanatory(sp?). Fit your tubes, notch them if they are not notched....etc.
GOOD LUCK!
Kyle

Your problem is ,The car is cad plated .And wire feeds HATE plating. So do heliarcs too.Just take a scotch brite wheel or a super fine sanding wheel.and sand off the paint and plating. And then no problem.
