Default Mugen vs. Spoon Engine Mounts

I replaced my belts today and found out that my lower driver-side engine mount is worn. So I'll be buying new engine mounts.

Rather than go back to stock, I'm going to buy aftermarket because I autocross in my Type R. I have the Mugen Lowdown suspension and 26mm rear sway bar and want to get the right engine mounts to complement the suspension.

To those who've used either engine mount set, what are your opinions on them?

I've got them, but $360+ is a bit much for stockish mounts IMHO.
Prothane or something more substantial might be nice, even ES inserts for that matter are a significant improvement over stock (and possibly over Mugen mounts as well).

The ES Inserts sound tempting because of the low cost, but are they ok to use if the stock mounts are worn?

Worn/aged? Or torn?
Chances are there might be a torn segment or two on one or more mounts.
That being said, by personal opinion is that inserts work nicely, and with torn mounts a little silcone filler might help out as well (but would probably take a couple days to cure depending on how much silcone was used).

I've got some Mugen Mounts with the inserts at the moment in the ITR, but still have to install the rear mount/support inserts into the stock mount because I didn't get that one back with the turbo motor stuff and I found a separate back set from Black R (which are still in a box somewhere between here and OH).

The one on the lower driver side was worn. If you move the inner piece, you can see little cracks all over the place and its really easy to jiggle it around.

The upper driver mount still looks good. I couldn't check the passenger and rear mounts though.

I had the same issue as you, and decided to get new stock mounts and a combination of ES and Prothane inserts. Costs money, but still not nearly as much as a set of Mugen mounts. I think this cost me about $300, compared to $440 for a set of Mugen mounts.

Get a set of Prothane inserts for $50 and call it a day. As for the lower trq mounts, Jim Fab makes replacements and ES has inserts that will work fine.

they also make your cabin vibrate like a battery operated boyfriend (***** lol)

i used to have jimfab mounts. emphasis on "used to."
if you're hardcore and your car is tracked, get the jimfabs.
if you drive your car daily and/or on dates with chics, get something else.

Baaahhhh it's not that bad. I use my car 90% on the streets of NYC and Yeah it vibrates but nothing unbearable.

I have had a few passengers and they don't seem to mind.

Well to tell you the truth...

When I took you for a ride a while back, I was on a death wish and was hoping to take you Out along with a few people I did not like... But since then things have changed and I have been taking the Prescriptions like the Doc told me to. And my failsafe to kill was the Cyclone... It has killed a few

Well. Just finished putting in the ES Inserts. The driver side lower mount was definitely worn/cracking. The passenger side lower mount was ok. The rear mount was worn and cracking. Almost torn all the way through.

The rear mount was a b^tch! I'm officially a member of the club.. I truely know your pain.

Broke one 3/8" u-joint extension, but got it replaced for free at sears.
The car feels very stiff in the front. Even though the Mugen Lowdowns are set to 2 in the front, the front feels like its as stiff as the 4 setting now..

The car is a bit louder too,but it handles great. I'm still waiting for the prothane insert to arrive so I can do the two upper mounts.

How do I use a press to press out the driver side bushing? I've never used or seen a press before. I'm thinking about buying a 1/2 ton Arbor press, but have no idea how to press out the driver side bushing..

pepboys has them... they're alright, but i don't think a good permanent solution. i'm going to go with the hasport street kit. i hear that some ppl don't even run the front-lower mounts that bolt up in the fender lining. is this safe for daily driving and some track use/mtn roads?

I bought mine from http://www.energysuspensionparts.com/home/
I'm still waiting from my Prothane upper passenger insert. There was a problem with my order, but they said that the warehouse is going to send one out to me.

Ok.. I ordered these from Harbor Freight. Hopefully this will be good enough to press out and press in the upper driver side engine mount bushing..

The driver plates look a little skimpy, but I figure if I double up on the plates, there won't be a problem.

Update:
I had put on the 4 inserts. The only one I didn't do was the upper driver's mount.
The car was a tiny bit noisier than before, but nothing bad.

After I put the prothane inserts in the upper driver-side engine mount, the car was so damn noisey when I turned the engine on. Things shook that never shook before.

When I took a test drive, the feeling of the road was muddy because of the vibrations coming from the steering wheel and pedals. Driving between 70 - 90 mphs caused the car to resonate and drive you crazy. When I hit vtec, forget it. It was too much noise for daily driving. I actually had to wear ear plugs to keep myself from getting a headache.

I ordered a new OEM mount and replaced the old one. The gains (if any) didn't justify all the noise for a daily driver.. If this was just my weekend - around town/fun car I wouldn't have mind. The noise is manageable at slower speeds (0- 45 mph).

Now that I have the stock mount, its much quieter now. Don't get me wrong. The car is still noisy, but compared to before (with the insert) this is quiet. The ride feels nice and smooth and I can feel every crevice of the road again.

So I'm going to put my old mount with prothan inserts up for sale in the classifieds sometime. PM me if anyone wants first dibs.

I'm extremely happy that I didn't put the jimfabs. Now if this was just my dedicated autoX car, I'd do the jimfabs for sure.
