how often do you have to replace the battery? ive had the same battery for 4 years that came stock when i bought the car new in 2001.

what are some common signs of the battery going out or needing a replacement? can you take it to an autozone or something for them to check and charge it or should i just buy a new one?

 

yes you could take it to auto zone to get it check if your car struggles to start that could be a sign

so the battery light doesnt have to be on when its on its way out?

This is hardly the norm, but I just replaced the battery in my 95 Coupe EX this week for the very first time. Just shy of 10 yrs. No warning, just gave up the ghost the other day.

With 70K miles, my original Potenza RE92 tires still have good tread on them and have worn very evenly. I think I'm going to replace them now though, due to age. Also on the original brake pads, etc.

Most relevant is probably cold cranking amps and the warranty. Cars are 12V DC. You don't need to do much homework, as fitment guides pretty much simply point to the single (usually) model that is applicable from a given battery maker or dealer.

Most Honda batts are sourced from Interstate or Delphi, depending on the dealer. I did my homework last week, and after calling around and getting good input from independent dealers of both, I was directed to Costco for their house brand (which may be Interstate sourced). Anyway, for my Civic EX, at $35 it was about half price of the best deals I found elsewhere, and the warranty is excellent. Was a direct fit, started right up, good to go.

whats a good # to look for on Cold Cranking Amps?

 

a 'good ' battery will test over 12 volts with a DC voltmeter with the car off.... bad batteries or those going bad will test below 12 volts.
battery life depends upon the environment of where you live too.

 

what happens if you buy a battery that doesnt have enough cca?

 

The car will be hard to start.
I just replaced my original battery, from 97, last week. The new one is a cheap pos, because its all they had (its got like 450cca...)

 

I've had my standard battery in the car from new 6 years now. No problems yet.
