LS Vtec is as reliable as you build it, the reason some ls'vtec die a horrible death is because if you think about it they are built and people race them. If you race any motor you will replace it soon anyhow. I've been building a LS/VTEC for a while and I'll let you know I wish I had just bought a GSR and done headwork on it. I know a guy with a LS motor in his civic and most cars can't keep up with it. You can do it but be warned after gaskets seals, new bearing, vtec oil pump, most likely boring and hone the block, B16 water pump (VTEC) B16 Timing Belt (VTEC) parting it together, plugging the oil galley in the head, B18 (LS) head gasket. I'm wishing I had just bought a GSR complete. if you do go the route of LS/VTEC let me know and I'll send you the bible on doing it. might even be in the forums some where.
i have an ls/vtec and i love it. it makes great power and its low compression, stock cams(built for turbo) the horror stories are mostly from bad builds.
if you build the motor the oil squirters are not useful anyway

you cannot rev an ls/vtec to the moon, but it makes great power.

He has it right to the point, your most likely building this motor to race, or push to the limit, so thus it will blow in due time. Build it correctly, and you won't be stuck a month later with a blown motor and a couple of g's in the hole. Everything about cars is like life, you get what you pay for.
