NE1 using the ats fd without gsr 5th gear?
I'm trying to find out if anyone uses the ats 4.9 fd with the stock itr gearing....I was wondering if it is decently streetable with out using the gsr 5th.....I will not be doing a whole lot of freeway driving since I'm moving right down the street from work. I talked to Dave at R+D and we both agree that the jdm fd would be fine but the ats may be pushing it a bit....any suggestions?...opinions
*raises hand*
It's fine.
I wouldn't change a thing in retrospect.
Be careful, though: somebody's gonna tell you to do a search soon..... I can feel it.

Mark,
As I said on the phone, it is all subjective. Streetable for some is not streetable for others. I would not mess with the 5th gear either way (JDM or ATS). Thanks, talk to you thursday.

GSR fifth= waste of money IMO.
The only reason to get one is to raise top speed over 230kph, as the rps are only 500 higher with the ATS so highway cruizing is not much louder than stock. Who needs to go that fast?

Ditto on the first part, and uh..... already done on the 2nd part.

96 spec 1-5 and ats final = Woohoo! FUN
Why is having the GS-R 5th gear such a bad thing? For my application it is perfect. I do highway driving every day to and from work and i like to save money in gas. I do notice a drop in power shifting into 5th gear but if i am redlining my car who needs to go faster than 110 (top speed in 4th gear)??? I mean having it isn't all the bad. If all you do is road race your car and you get to speeds well above 100 mph then yeah stick with the stock 5th gear for more acceleration on the track. Oh well just my .02
BTW mine is the JDM 4.785 not the ATS

I rather have the lower RPMS in 5th. I don't really need the crazy acceleration in 5th cause I only use it to cruise the streets and freeways. I'll be getting a GSR 5th with the JDM final.
Thanks for eveyones replies.....it looks like I'm going to do the ats with the stock 5th gear......
TRUST me, you'll love it!
Now ya just gotta pick a light weight flywheel to round it all out.A.

a GSR 5th with a JDM final? That just sounds silly to me. And yes I do understand your concern with RPM but, the JDM FD doesn't require the GSR5th to be bearable. I could maybe understand the GSR 5th and the 4.929 but Not the JDM FD. And the ATS is most certainly tolerable and loads of fun on all roads.
Just curious, but have you driven a car yet with either the JDM or ATS FD? If not, you really should to better understand and appreciate it.
Good luck,
A.
I too have plans of getting the JDM FD. To decide if I should go for the GSR 5th, I did some testing. I cruised in 5th gear with the RPMs at 4500 (speed was around 85mph) and it didn't sound that much louder than cruisng at ~4100 rpms. So I'm skipping on the GSR 5th. Is this an accurate representation of what the JDM FD is going to be like while crusing at 80mph?
Anyway, it's your car so do what you want.

Once again I'll link to a VERY useful if not informative tool to figure out what and where different gearing may put you. It's plug-n-play, just add the gear #'s you want and have at it. It may not be the definitive tool to figure gearing, but, it gives you a good idea of what you have and what you'll have if you swap stuff out.

.....do you fall out of vtec on the 4-5 shift?
Another option is to turn the vtec off while on long trips... Or tune the partial throttle maps for fuel economy.....
