The only poor man's type R I know of officially is and L/S Vtec.
A GSR's and Type R's Rod/Stroke ratio a diff. than an LS's.
I don't know what the outcome would be from using a GSR's bottom end.
Take a B18B block, put type R or B16A (higher compression) Pistons on it, and run a B16A head. Run Hondata and then you'll make as much or more WHP as a stock Type R.
I'm not a gear head but I can speak from my own experience.

depends what tranny your running, but with 173 WHP and running an LS tranny on street tires I could only pull a 15.025 1/4 mile run.

That is not a poor man's Type-R and neither is an LSVTEC... using a completely stock GSR bottom end with a stock B16 head would actually put the compression lower than a stock GSR. It's not a poor man's R without a piston swap

if i'm not mistaken... all you would really need are jdm p30 pistons off the b16. according to some of the compression ratio calculators that should bring you to about 11:4 cr. but yeah do a search. most people doing this setup uses a gsr block, b16 head, different IM/TB, piston swap, and maybe a cam swap. usually end up with about 170-180 hp. In eg hatches, if i remember with good 60 ft times they usually net mid 13's slips. nice aggressive cams, and a good header are your secrets to making more power.

My LS Vtec is a poor man's Type R then because I did the piston swap.

I used a B18B block with LS Rods and PR3 pistons. This yealded 11.63:1 compression for me.

that really sucks man b/c i have an ls tranny and i'm port and polishing my head with type r valvetrain, i really need to get a b16 tranny.

Ya!
I swapped my LS Vtec out for a JDM B16A with DP Nos...love the tranny, miss the torque.

i have a gsr w/ ctr pistons, skunk 2 manifold (itr replica) tuned w/ hondata! compression should be around 12:5:1! i consider my motor a "poor mans R" well for one thing im poor!

This is pretty much the recipe for a Poor-mans Type-R:

* B18C1/B18C GSR block
* PR3 B16 or ITR head
* PR3, CTR or ITR Pistons

If the motor uses an LS block with VTEC head then that's an LSVTEC, regardless of what's done/not done internally. Using a completely stock GSR block and B16 head is more like a Poor GSR due to the lower than stock GSR compression (about 9.6:1). You want the higher compression with a piston swap to get the ITR power output, unless you're boosting it that is.

dont mean to ask all they n00bie questions here!
OK so compression is LOWER in a b16 head on a b18c1 block w/ ctr pistons compared to a stock b18c1 motor w/ ctr pistons sooo what you are saying (if im reading it right) is that a b18c1 motor is better ( or higher compression) than a b16 head on a b18c1 block right? hope you can understand my question

well, the reason why people use this combination of b16 head on b18c block is because they are trying to put together a motor similar to a type r b18c5. the c5, all it really is, is a gsr block with higher compression pistons, and a b16 head with a port 'n' polish and better valvetrain and cams. Plus something like the b16 and type r head in general flow better than the one on the b18c. I know there have been tests to prove that the flow difference is very minimal, but there are the believers that say that honda used the pr3 cast for the type r head for a reason.

i swear i was gunna make a post for " poor mans type r motor " but someone already beat me to it...my b16a shortblock is messed up and i need a new bottom end so i was going to get a 95 gsr shortblock...is this swap stock gsr bottom end with a stock 2nd gen jdm b16a head be slower than a actual gsr motor ?

although i still have my Pr3 pistons from my 2nd gen jdm b16a block but i dunno if i can afford a piston swap from a professional righ now

no, this is not a poor man's type r swap, this is just a beefed up gsr. good stuff though... like i said the difference in flow between the pr3 head and the one on the gsr is minimal. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Got Milk &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">i swear i was gunna make a post for " poor mans type r motor " but someone already beat me to it...my b16a shortblock is messed up and i need a new bottom end so i was going to get a 95 gsr shortblock...is this swap stock gsr bottom end with a stock 2nd gen jdm b16a head be slower than a actual gsr motor ?

put your pr3 pistons in the gsr bottom before you do the install or else you end up with lower compression just like mentioned before. do a search for one of the compression ratio calculators. using the pr3 pistons in the gsr block with a pr3 head gives you about 11:4 ratio... don't quote me on that, but its something like that.

wut if u used the stock gsr pistons with a different head gasket to raise the compression would that work ???

^I believe the cambers on a b16 head are larger than on a gsr head, so even if you used gsr pistons with the b16 head it will lower your compression, unless you shave the head

yeah... that sounds about right... thinner gaskets only raise compression so much. remember the object is to get a motor as close to a c5 as possible, you you want to get the compression ratio as close to the c5 as possible.
