Comp Cams stage 1
Has anyone used comp cams stage one cams? I am considering these for my B16. I dont want a high lift cam as I dont want to worry about my LMA's, and valves hitting my pistons. Just any experience good or bad would be nice. I am mainly concerned with durability. I also looked at skunk2 and Crower, but the comps seem good in comparison, but a lower price.
Thanks

I use the car for Solo 2 racing. Want a wider power band, not just top end. Like I mentioned before concerned mainly with durability, and dont want to worry about valve interferance. As well my LMA's are pretty worn, and will probably replace them at the same time with the Prelude ones.
These are the current relevant mods:
Civic type R N1 crank pulley
JDM Integra Type R v-tech solenoid
Integra Type R valve springs and retainers
Hondata
ACT Streetlite flywheel
AEM fuel rail
AEM cold air intake
Thermal R&D stainless steel catback exhaust
Stainless steel pre resonator
So any expeirence and or relevant opionons would be helpful. Thanks alot

Yeah and it took some work to make it fit. I was having problems with the original vtech solinod because you cannot get the right gasket and screen for the first gens. The gasket you can get from Honda Canada fits the redisgn.
No i was able to get it cheaper. Like i mentioned it was only to stop oil leaking, by being able to get the right gasket. Lets not change the point of the thread. I am aksing for info on Comp Cams stage one.

The only reason I can think of to use a JDM ITR VTEC solenoid would be to not have that VTEC pressure switch left unconnected if you decide not to use it.

As for Comp Cams, you are kind of on your own here. Nobody uses these cams because they have no reputation. Because cams are not so cheap that you can toss them if they don't work well for you, people tend to go for cams that they know will work well for them. And quite frankly, I would not buy Comp Cams because I don't know how good they really are. Yes, they have quite a reputation in domestic circles. But this does not necessarily mean that they know how to build a good VTEC cam. And until I find out otherwise, I would go with more of a sure thing. Now if you want to try Comp Cams, go ahead. Many of us would like to know if they really work.
I always like a challenge. Comps cams it is. I'll let you guys know what I think.
*edit* Looking into the comp cam more is seems to be the same duration as my stock cam, just more lift, and more lift than the civic type R. I dont think this is what I want.

Good point. Stage 1 cams are often not a big enough gain over stock to justify their cost.

I have a book where they swapped these stage 1 comp cams on a basically stock b16. It had CAI,exhaust, header I believe. They said you could use stock valvetrain. I think it may have peaked out at like 15hp and 6ft/lbs tq. I'll try to find it.
I have had experience with the Comp 3's but not the 1's. I've seen the 3's work well in 2 different set-ups, better than the Crowers (mostly because one of them broke
), but seemed to help in mid range power, better than the Crowers with that particular set-up. The durability has been good, they're still running
. Most stage 1 cams probably perform similar to each other, because they usually retain the stock valvetrain. Can't get too aggressive...

It not that they arent big enough, its that they have to much lift when compared to a CTR cam.

Thanks for the info. That helps, I am looking for more midrange than anything.
