Default D16Z6 Sputtering.

Hey guys. Today I was changing my thermostat gasket and thermoswitch on the housing. I let it sit for like 30 minutes and waited for it to warm up and the fan spun a couple of times. I then set the ignition timing to 16* btc.

I've never let this motor run longer then it has today. And I am under the impression that my thermoswitch wasn't even bad... I just wasn't letting my car warm up long enough.

Anyways something I have always noticed about the car was there was a slight... veery slight... but deep toned sputter. JUst like... "putt.... putt" every few seconds in a real deep tone. Anyways. I press on the gass slightly and as it goes up in RPM I lay off the gas and on it's way back to lower RPM it sputters pretty bad and I can feel the sputter in the seats and everything.

The fuel filter is fresh, haven't tested fuel pressure yet (duno if that even relates to the problem). All stock injectors, fuel pump etc. I did notice a while back that the fuel pump was making a whining noise, also dont know if that relates to the problem...

J/W guys, does it sound like a fuel problem? Or could it be something more serious?

Oh yeah, no CEL. Firing order is good. Ignition timing is good. The car has never done this before and this is the first time i've warmed this motor up to this extent and is the first time ive experienced this bad sputtering. Also seems to go up in RPM fine, but on it's way down (not on throttle) is when the sputtering is extreme.

It kind of sounds like a popping sound huh? I get it with partial throttle or a WOT run and then letting off quickly. It's been doin it to me for like 2 years and 2 different motors. never really thought anything of it. Advance your timing a couple of degrees and see if that helps, I think it might be part the combustion (ie. burning air/fuel mix) process in the exhaust manifold, but i could be wrong

it happened to me when i shifted from 3rd to 2nd when i was revved at 7000rpms. seriously bad move when your racing. I could never find the problem i was thinking it was the valve but someone told me it could of been one my sensors. I sold the car so i dont have to worry about that.

Check my thread I started a day or two ago. I had the same problem, Changed all my wires and plugs and it was gone. I even noticed a little pick me up. Seemed to run alot better.

So did you ever end up putting that cap and rotor on? Did it make the idle problem go away?

The wires and plugs got rid of the sputtering/bogging sound and feel. The low idle is still there. Its not -That- bad. It doesnt threaten to die or anything. I did just put the new cap and rotor on. Didnt test it because its 1 am and I got work in the morning.
