Default Gauge importance question

I am thinking about putting a couple of Autometer gauges in my EG and was wondering what gauges I should put in. I know that Water Temp is important for an early warning of problems. I need to know what else is a good early warning gauge.

Please keep in mind I do not want to tap the block or head to hook up a gauge.

Thanks

put whatever guages u want in there. What do you wanna know? Oil pressure thats a good one, fuel pressure? thats also a good one.

Are you ever gonna boost your engine, then boost + EGT + oil & fuel pressure would be common sense and would a AF ratio gauge. Lookat summitracing.com there are litteraly hundreds of guages to put in there.

It all depends on your car and what you have or are going to do for it. If you are totally stock when you really don't need any of them. If you are swapped oil temp, pressure and water temp are nice to know. If you are boosted the I would go with Oil temp and pressure, EGT, boost and water temp.

I am building a track car no boost running a close to stock engine that will be built to rev to 8500 rpm SOHC.

I just really want to know what gauge would be the best indicator to shut down my engine now before it blows-up. I am thinking oil temp or pressure but I do not want to create a new hole in the engine for it.

Oil pressure and exhaust temperature (there are pre-threaded passages for oil and coolant right below the dizzy on a D-series head) come to mind as important in a road race car. My engine's stock and doesn't see much high-rpm duty, so I'm satisfied with my Autometer oil pressure gauge.

In that case I would go with oil temp, oil pressure and then water temp as well. For oil pressure you can buy a sandwitch adapter that goes between your oil filter and the block for about $50 that is pretapped. For oil temp you would either have to buy an oil pan that comes pretapped for the temp probe or you have to tap your own. I am not to sure on water temp as that is one of the few guages that I have never had. It is on my list of things to do but have just not gotten it done yet.

Those would be the 3 best guages for your application IMO. There are a lot of factors that going into blowing an engine usually but those are 3 of the main causes/contributors to the problems.

I would recommend oil pressure and battery voltage. Those guages are pretty self explanitory on what they do.

Try http://www.tunerschoice.com or PM civicross he is a friend and he works for Tuners Choice. I can not remember if they have one for the D16 but that is where I got the one for my B18. If you PM Ross he may know a good place to find one if he can not get you hooked up with one.

When I boost my engine in the next month or so I'm just getting an AFR meter and a boost guage. Everything else I can see on my dash or my ECU will take care of it.

Honestly if you get a narrow band AF guage you are wasting your money. Either get a wide band sensor or even an EGT both are better indicators than the narrow band. My roommate got one a long time ago and it does nto work well at all it only works at certain times and then only when he is at WOT.

Sorry, meant a wide-band O2 w/ AFR meter. What is EGT? External Gate Temp?

EGT = Exhaust Gas Temp.
