unfortunately, it's not really worth it to modify in any way. at least, that's my opinion. just leave it as is and have a nice reliable car to cruise around with.

It'd be much easier to sell it and get a type-s. Since this is not a factor, I'd say go for show, because it's gonna be really hard to improve a base auto performance wise.
My suggestions:
Injen CAI - won't help too much, maybe a 3-4 hp boost on a base auto and increases chances of hydrolock if he's worried about that ****. Makes it sound better though.
Exhaust: I'd say an Greddy Evo2 or Apex'i N1 to increase the sound.
Rims and drop...just springs and get new struts in a year or 2 when they die out. I'd avoid coilovers because you don't need them on a base auto.
Maybe a type-r wing if that's his taste (not mine, I prefer stock look)
Maybe a BC2 or CWest lipkit and rear underbody spoiler.
Besides that increase the stereo.
Just tell him to enjoy the car. He'll have plenty of time to upgrade later on.
If he must go faster, Comptech will have a base auto supercharger in about 3-4 months. I think the price on that will be about 3-4k. With that he'll be faster than stock type-s.

base auto? just enjoy it mang. maybe get a better sound system. a base auto is not something you'll be going fast in.
but if he really wants to increase performance, either go with the to-be-released comptech sc, or swap the motor. if that's too much money, just swap the tranny and a k20a2 head. hope that helps.
