track time
who here goes to any track days, and how and where do i sign up? i know about the safty wiring and removing of head/tail/marker lights, but i just need some direction on how to get on the track. i live in salt lake city utah and know i can go down to vegas. anyone want to have me come down with them sometime? even if i have to drive to cali i will. i want to fine tune my riding skills and not do it through a canyon where i will dissapear if i lay it down in a corner doin 80. i think of myself as a pretty good rider (drag knee), but i have never been on a track. any and all USEFUL info appreciated thanks in advance
Wow I don't know of any tracks existing out in Salt Lake......but you did mention Vegas so you have two options there, Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS) and Pahrump.
If you looking at going to Pahrump info can be found here http://www.socaltrackdays.com/ bike prep info can be cound here http://www.socaltrackdays.com/TermsPrep.htm
If you looking at going to LVMS you can go here for info http://www.fastrackriders.com/....html bike prep stuff can be found here http://www.fastrackriders.com/....html
There is other info out there, but I don't think (not to my knowledge) that anything is close to the Salt Lake area. I have heard that Pahrump is a blast, especially with their "no session" thing that they do.

You cal also try http://www.sportbiketracktime.com
LVMS is a tight small and really fun track. Pahrum adds a few high speed straight and flat sweepers, and flow pretty darn well for a big track.

Not all trackdays will require safety wire. The requirements vary from organizer-to-organizer.
Fastrack runs a timely show, but the prices are pretty high. Many organizers run at Spring Mountain Motorsports Park (Pahrump), which is a fun track. There is a great mix of different types of turns and straights.
The "no session" thing can be good, because you can maximize your on-track time. But, you will also be sharing the track with very skilled (and some non-skilled) riders. You might not want to have to deal with ricky-racer passing you up on the inside. Other groups, such as http://www.sportbiketracktime.com/ provide a great time. I've also had a positive experience with Dial It In trackdays.

Anybody deal with sbr trackday? I have a trackday with them this Friday. Dealing with Ken over the phone and email, he is awesome! He is even reserving half of the garage for our group!!
Heres a list check-off list that I got from a trackday provider:
# Mirrors taped or (preferably) removed
# All glass and plastic lenses taped or removed
# Headlight, tail light and turn signals thoroughly taped, unplugged or fuses removed (i.e. they must not work or else not be visible at all, even when brakes are activated)
# Tires must be in good condition with plenty of tread (where applicable)
# Only DOT pavement or roadracing tires
# All valve stems MUST have caps (preferably metal with integral rubber grommet)
# Wheel weights taped
# Fully operational front AND rear brakes
# Functional engine kill switch on handlebar
# License plate taped or removed
# No glycol-based coolants. Replace coolant with plain water or water with Water Wetter. Most of us live in California: there is no need for anti-freeze here and Water Wetter has better heat-transfer properties (i.e. your bike runs cooler). You can get Water Wetter at almost any motorcycle supply store (Cycle Gear, Road Rider, Zoom Cycles, etc).
water wetter and water is a must since coolant is 10x more slick and harder to clean up than oil.
# Motorcycle and KEYS to your motorcycle if it needs keys. People can and DO forget their key. If you forget your keys we can get a locksmith out, but you're not going to be on the track until at least 11am. So double check that you have the keys in your pocket as you drive away from your house!
# Canopy or some form of shade. You're welcome to use the Thunderhill communal canopies but if you'd like to rest away from where all the action is, get some shade.
# Toolbox. Common tools to perform minor work on your bike (for exmaple, tools to remove your wheels if you're planning on getting new tires at the track)
# Spares kit (if you have one). There's no feeling as bad as doing something minor like tipping your bike over in the pit and having that be the end of your day because you snap a footpeg and don't have a spare
# Ramp(s) to load and unload your motorcycle (but there'll be plenty there).
# Tire pressure gauge
# Tire pump (often a bicycle pump works... check it on your bike at home first)
# An emergency contact sheet to leave in a highly visible location in your vehicle -- just in case. This is especially vital if you're coming by yourself.
# Gas. Your motorcycle uses more gas than you think when you have the throttle wide open.
# Helmet
# Boots
# Gloves
# Leathers
# Back protector. Easy to forget!
# Ear plugs if you use them. We recommend that you do; wind noise causes permanent damage to your hearing and distracts you.
# Duct tape
# Miscellaneous spare fuses for your bike
# Zip ties
# Timing equipment (if you have any)
# Fresh batteries for timing equipment
# Camera
# Cash (for purchasing photos, videos or timing services)
# When was the last time you lubed your chain?
My friend is holding a trackday next thursday (6/30) at Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, CA. $180 two group format. Contact me if you're interested

8/16 is when I'll be on vacation outside of the country.
But I have two more tracks I want to try before the year is over - Laguna and THill. After I cross those two off my list, then I can settle for mastering the local tracks. :D
