Default Building ITR Motor

Wondering what you guys think of my all motor plans on my ITR. All comments welcomed, positive AND negative.

Current mods:
AEM intake
DC 421 Header
Skunk2 exhaust
Edelbrock IM
STR fuel rail
AEM cam gears
AEM FPR
Walbro 255 pump
MSD blaster coil

Plan to Add:
Skunk2 stage 2 cams (better cams out there?, are these worth upgrading from itr cams)
Skunk2 Valvetrain (valve springs, retainers, valves) Are they all better than type r?
Civic Type R pistons (higher compression)
Eagle rods (is this worth it? how good are type r?)

Current mods:

AEM intake -- works for me, but there is better out there, such as Mugen or comptech

DC 421 Header -- if it has a 2.5 inch collector then it ok, but I would upgrade to a 4-1 header- they are built for the upper rpm range, like our motors.

Skunk2 exhaust -- if you like it and it's a min of 60mm or 2.36 it should be fine for the mild mods you want.

Edelbrock IM -- Not really necessary for a mild modded motor like yours, but should be fine.

STR fuel rail -- Again, Not really necessary for a mild modded motor like yours, but should be fine.

AEM cam gears -- if you make sure they don't slip then your good.

AEM FPR -- could come in handy...

Walbro 255 pump -- again, could come in handy.

MSD blaster coil -- From what I have seen, not needed or will be, stock is fine for most built motors.

Plan to Add:

Skunk2 stage 2 cams (better cams out there?, are these worth upgrading from itr cams) -- If you got the cash to install or the know how, then go for it, I have seen good gains.

Skunk2 Valvetrain (valve springs, retainers, valves) Are they all better than type r? -- I dunno if they are needed. But if your with in the stock redline then I don't think you need them.

Civic Type R pistons (higher compression) -- Installing those will be costly and you might run into issues with the rebuilt (shady mechanics) But would also need a EMS of some sort.

Eagle rods (is this worth it? how good are type r?) -- For what you have listed, I don't think they would be needed, but I could be wrong.

All of my statements/ comment are in my opinion and could be wrong or right, Have fun with your project.

I've read a few times on this website that the Edelbrock IM will not yield much gain (if any) on a normally aspirated 1.8L. There is simply not enough air moving through the engine to warrant that upgrade. This statement can be backed with actual dyno results that have been posted in the Forced Induction section along with pages of debate on when a manifold like this is actually necessary.

Also, many on here will agree with me, that the Type R ignition system is more than enough if your keeping it all motor. Actually many R owners who are turbo charged (including myself) keep the factory ignition because it is that reliable.

The brand of cam gears is irrelivent (to a point). Every manufactuer out there makes the same thing, with making minor changes to the cosmetic look to the cam gears for patent purposes. However, one comany that I have seen (in person because I own a pair) have the only patent that I know of that uses a locking bolt to keep the cam gears from slipping. No other manufactuer can do this because of the obvious patent. So with all the others out there, your relying on four bolts or whatever it is they use to keep the cam gear from slipping. AEM has a five bolt model and a three bolt model. There can be ten bolts. As long as there is no implimentation of an actual locking device, then there is no relevancy on how many bolts are actually used. Read the key features on the AEM website. Personally, I can't trust that hype. Weak Sauce. If your interested...ST Corsa is the company that I'm speaking of which has the patent. They are also cheaper then some brand name stuff out there. Go figure.

Your build looks as if your going for higher compression. Look at thinner head gaskets, milling the head and actually duing head work. You will get a lot of hp out of head work. Contact Max_CFM here on HT for his rates. I read up on his stuff and friends of mine like his work.

At any rate, hope this helps.

Aloha,
Brandon

See my link from below...

i have OEM Honda internals, CTR Cams, S100 Hondata, is way to go for all motor.. I have Skunk 2 IM, with larger TB, works great with Short RAM.. Just got J's Racing, IM, will check on Dyno numbers... but Chassis is as important as engine numbers...

Dynoed at 190 hp, 130 TQ...

My only diff is JDM P73-00 pistons, give little higher Comp..

ran great at Expo 5...

PM with questions...

Awesome feedback guys! Lots of help. Also.. I was thinking of running a jdm p73 itr ecu. Would that be a good choice? Dont really think it is necessary for me to go with a full ems with so little mods.

It all comes down to tuning. The more options when tuning the more chances for power. I'd rather have a full EMS then not enough. ( if the budget allows )

As Rob said, it all comes down to tuning. A lot of people make good power with the parts you listed.

If I could ever calm my, "OMG my caR is gonna blow up" paranoia I may do cams also.

I can't say that I agree with all of your choices, but it's a start. Also note that the stock ITR rods will be fine with PCT's, but personally, I'd use GSR rods with P30's.
