Default Couple of questions regarding 99-00 Civic SI

ok, I currently own a 1998 civic EX coupe and there is someone selling a 1999 Civic SI, so I was thinking about selling and little by little fixing this car..........its a salvage title with a different B16 engine in it. It is a USDM engine and everything looks legit. Car and engine, etc.......person is selling for $3000 pickup, BUT the rear of the car has been rear-ended, looks like frame will have to be pulled. Vehicle has 109,000 on chasis.....engine miles unknown. SI headrests were replaced with EX ones. My questions are:

He scanned the title and showed it to me and it shows the VIN#, etc....and it states 1999 honda civic cpe......how do i know this is a valid SI, can i verify by checking with carfax?

Also, his title states salvage in the state of Colorado and i plan to do pickup and register in NY, will there be a problem with that or just the same and regular registering?

Been looking for an SI forever and I figure in the end after everything is fixed i would have probably got the SI for about $$5500 MAX.

make sure he has papers for the engine.
buy it, and swap all the parts onto your car(all interior if you want, gauge cluster, rear brakes, motor, wheels, front end, etc.)
for 3000, i'd definately do it.

Si's have rear disc brakes, and the steering wheel is leather wrapped. Look at those too.

last time I noted, B16a2's didnt have vin numbers on the block, well Atleast I cant find one on mine or a few of other SI's. They have the Vin on the tranny and not on the block like on the type r's or b18b's wheres its at the buttom close to the header. So double check to see if he has everything legit cause some people are just skecthy asses

yeah, 99-00 si has leather steering wheel.....its a stitching.

Thanks for the responses......

VIN# is: 1HGEM1151XL091915 on the title so that means its an SI i guess because of the EM1. Also title shows in Colorado and on the top says Rebuilt from salvage Certificate of Title. So that means i can just register it without inspection of the vehicle, etc right?

I want to end up fixing the 1999 civic SI instead because my car needs a new paint job, dents on it anyway and cost of fixing not much more different then fixing the SI, maybe a difference of $500-$800 i assume

The engine he has He claims it to be another USDM b16a2 engine. The vin #1HGLM11S1XL091915..........doesnt say EM1 on it though????? and spoke to him and does not have paperwork for it and SRS light is on.

Things that need to be fixed so far for this car is:
Rear Bumper
Rear frame is pushed in a little
passenger side tailight
passenger side rear filler
Passenger side rear quarter panel
dents on driver side rear quarter panel

Is there a way to check these VIN#s? anyone have carfax, etc? Thanks for the help in advance. I just want to make sure everything is good because i dont want to get screwed on this deal.

i'd be skeptical of a rear end damaged car with a different engine..., whats his story behind why it is different then the car...

also check the vins on the other body panels... fenders/doors/bumpers/trunk lid

Owner says the car was first stolen and stripped. Then fixed and received the salvage title. Then got rear-ended.........I also noticed that you (QuikJaysun) just purchased an SI within the last month. Do you mind me asking how much u bought it for, condition miles, etc?

I just checked carfax (just the "free" one) and typed in the 2nd VIN and nothing came up...

You probably have the "L" on the fourth # wrong 1HGLM11S1XL091915. It should probably be a "E". I checked carfax with the E and it came up as a 99 Si

But IMO I wouldn't even bother with it. Sounds really sketchy

I just noticed that the engine VINs both look the same but with a couple of letters changed. Hmmmm............

Usually if there was an engine swap involved, does the swap HAVE to include a title as well? or just paperwork on who did it?

Can you afford the normal price for an EM1? Or are you getting this just b/c its cheap. Theres a stock black one in my town in NJ being sold at the dealer. No idea on price, I just saw it as I passed by.

B16A2 Does have Vin on the block. It's hidden behind the exhaust manifold. I also purchase a Theft Recovery Si not to long ago..if its already inspected, its good to go. Here in texas, they do a thorough inspection on everything espceially if its theft recovery.

nope, can-not afford 99-00 SI straight up to buy. Don't want to finance either. Finally have the 1998 civic EX coupe paid off and dont want to go into debt again. That's why I was looking into a cheap one that i can fix lil' by lil'

So even if the engine itself is unknown. I can get it register with no problems and have no issues with legality?

Sell your Ex and buy a nice SI. You would be much happier in the long run not messing with a car that has been messed with and is wrecked. Either that or get an Integra.

Once my EX is paid off I will sell and put that money twords an SI or Integra. Just my .02 cents.

Well, my 1998 civic ex coupe with 111K on it would at best sell for $4500. Has scratches, etc........which means i would STILL have to finance a 1999-2000 SI....i would prefer not to.

Honestly the car seems like a good deal........dunno

registering it is a whole different story... you have to pass inspection in order to have everything legit.. and with no paperwork for the motor how do you plan on doing that ??? and rear end damaga and pulling the frame will cost you $$$... buy it ... use what you need... sell the rest of the parts... goto macoo and get a nice paint job... or somewhere else for 500 bucks... dont deal with the hassle..... take it from someone who has gone through it.

Trade in your Ex for 5k and finance the rest. It would be a little over 100/month. But I can tell you dont want a nice car. You want a hacked up SI which is fine, its your money.

I was in the market for a hatch for over a year before I found mine. My hatch was basically a front-end total when I found it. It was going to be totalled and put out to pasture before I came to its rescue. It was cheap, I had grown impatient, and I figured, "what the hell."

It is now two years later and I am finally getting the damn thing back to normal. Granted I was working part-time through college, so funds were minimal. But over the past two years of nursing it back to normal condition, I have found at-least a dozen other complete hatches I wished I would've bought instead.
Dont rush things just cause you can get a good deal, I learned that the hard-way.
