Default Checking your timing?

Just had a few questions, dont mind me if i sound stupid, but I have never checked my timing before and i am just curious on how you do it. Im getting a timing light tomorrow and just want to be sure that i do it right. thanks and if you need more info to give me an accurate answer let me know. Thanks.
