I got a 99 civic ex, aftermarket muffler(not sure what kind), short throw shifter(again dont know what kind), tint windows, the rest is stock. I just wanna know how well it will actually protect my car because its parked outside and once I start putting stuff on it it will look good to theives but I dont know if $500 alarm is worth it. Is it a really lot harder for them to get your car if you have an alarm. sorry im a n00b.

A car alarm is a must when it comes to vehicle security. Then build around the alarm.

 

not a guarantee to save your car, but obviously it's a LOT better than not having one...i mean it's soo easy to slim jim a car or break the windows and start it up, knowing how to disable the alarm is another level of thievery....but any thing you can do to prevent your car from getting jacked is good...u dont really "need" per say the 500$ alarm with tracking and all the goodies if u cant afford it....a simple 150$ alarm if installed good with lots of things to confuse potential thives can do a good job too.....check this website out http://members.***.net/shaundr....html

in my car ive got a simple alarm with the vibration sensor and door sensors etc...and i got that jack thing that you put in your clutch so that they cant push it and start the car....not to mention change gears....for my next security upgrade im planning on a removable steering wheel....oh yeah and i also got a fuel pump kill swithch...and sometimes i remove a *FUSE* (cant say which one for obvious reasons) ....trust me stealing a car is easier than you think, and any barriers you can put up is great...

 

yes, get an alarm. Also get a good one don't get the cheap ****. My friend had a cheap one i think it's called "Auto Page" or something like that and he opens and turns the key and five-ten seconds later is when the alarm kicks in. So i suggest something like a clifford. Just my .02

 

Thanks, Ill have to remember that when I talk to the local car security shop. I was reading over in the security forum before and from what I understand these things should really be professionally installed right?

 

They dont have to be unless you know what your doing. I did mine and that gave me the chance to mount it in a differnt location not easy to get at.

Yep, find a good and well known installer. Cartoys did a half *** 30 minute job on my car and stashed the antenna in the kickpanel giving me like 10ft of remote range.

Generally anything made by DEI (Python, Viper, Clifford etc.) is a good buy. Look to spend at least $250 on a basic alarm and install at a retail store.

 

Without question, you should definately get a alarm.

Alarms suck. I dont have an alarm. Instead get kill switches, detachable steering wheel, more kill switches, pull fuses. Make it so the only way they could take your car is tow it. That alone is better then any alarm.

This is true. But the way I see an alarm is that it's just 1 more thing a theif has to get through. Kill switches, pulled fuses, detachable steering wheels, it all adds up.

I have an alarm merely because its loud as hell and I installed it myself. (First time Too) Its not like a factory one. You can't even see anything for it. All hidden. Its simply a big *** noice maker if someone trys to pry your door or break a window. DONT Rely on it to save your car.

don't be a retard like everybody who sets the sensitivity so high that anything sets it off.mounting the shock sensor properly and adjusting it properly goes a long way.neither of my car's alarms go off unless there's reason to.no booming bass/loud mufflers/bird **** set them off.

i agree 100%.but i still think that an alarm is a good addition.you don't want a thief to have any more time than necessary before getting noticed-that just gives them more time to figure out your kill switches and other security devices.there's a chance that the initial noise of the siren may scare them off.it may also attract attention from somebody that otherwise wouldn't have noticed.
i know a good thief can bypass just about any alarm setup,but it certainly helps with all the other thieves.
what's even better is having a 2-way alarm.on both my cars i have DEI 2-way systems-Clifford Matrix on one,Viper 791 on the other.at my house i couldn't hear my alarm going off from my bedroom.since i've installed the 2-way alarm,it's gone off twice.once it woke me up at night.i ran to the kitchen window and looked out to see nobody there.the motion detector light(mounted right above the driveway)was on,and the shock sensor had been set off.
at my work i have to park about an 1/8th mile from the shop area.again,i wouldn't be able to hear my alarm siren.the other time it's been triggered was at work,and a coworker happened to be in a warehouse near my car.he ran outside when he heard the siren and chased off a young kid who was beating on my window.i ran up to the car a few seconds after the kid was gone.i was lucky that the coworker was there,but i would have never even known it was triggered with a standard alarm system.

i got both of these systems off Ebay for around $200 brand new.i installed both myself,with diagrams from http://www.the12volt.com.if you have a little electronic knowledge,you can do it.worst case scenario is paying $500 for one of these systems from a car audio retailer.either way you have at least that much already in your car-why take a chance?

Kill switches don't prevent thieves from jacking your wheels. My alarm went off while my car was being put on blocks, that's why I still have my wheels.

Get the alarm. The more obstacles in the thief's way, the better.

 

very vaild point its just that I dont live in high risk area and didnt feel the need, but I guess more is better than less( I did just get new rims)

All of that crap doesn't mean anything unless there's something drawing attention to your car. I'd say that your list is more important than the alarm itself, but ONLY when combined with the alarm. Without the alarm, the thief can act like he owns the car while he figures out your setup.

that's what i thought.i've never heard of ANY car getting stolen in this area at all.car theft and theft of performance parts is very rare around here......but,that doesn't stop crackheads from busting out your window hoping to get a radio("people do still steal radios,ya know"-Tyrone Biggums)or something of value-i learned that about seven years ago when my alarmless(ironically i had an appointment to get an alarm installed the next week)car got broken into and had over $6,000 worth of Clarion,Boston,PPI and JL audio equipment stolen.
also,keep in mind traveling out of town.i regularly go to NOVA and Maryland/DC to races,and up there Honda theft is a HUGE problem.my alarm and other security devices give me a little peace of mind up there.
if you only ever have one person break into your car the whole time you own it,that's too much-don't risk it.
