Default NEED HELP ON REV LIMITER!!!

My friend was driving my car today and he messed up on the shifting on my car. He stepped on the gas pedal and he revved it to 9200 for like 2-4 seconds. The needle kept on bouncing up and down, just like the start of the game Gran Tourismo. I have a B16A motor, and everything inside my block has been balanced. I have CTR pistons with shot peened rods. My head is stock B16A valvetrain with CTR cams. I am running a Mugen Spec chipped P28 ecu. Which sets my rev limiter at 9200 rpm and my car runs rich. My engine seems to be running fine with no signs of pinging or rattling. The only thing is that I haven't changed my engine oil for 3500 miles. Do you guys think my motor is f*cked up? How do you know if I have bent valves? My engine is going to be okay right??? Please help!!!

how could he "mess up a shift" and rev up to 9200 rpm for 4 sec?!? he'd have to floor the gas and hold it there for 4 seconds. i just don't quite get that....

about the engine; does it idle normally with no additional tapping, ticking, or fluttering? if it is idling smoothly and quietly, its probably OK.

i don't think it matters if you changed the oil 5 minutes ago or 3 months ago when it comes to engine damage due to overrevving.... its either gonna break or not. clean oil isn't going to make much of a difference.

later,
Todd

He said he knew how to drive stick, but I guess not. He didn't really misshift. It was more like he thought he was in gear so he just floored it. How loud does the ticking have to be? Can you totally hear that there is a problem in your engine? It "seems" fine, but I am very paranoid.

Knowing how to drive a stick, and KNOWING how to drive a stick it two completly different things. Better take his "Fast and the Furious" tape away from him.

My thought is: If reving up to the point were you have your rev limiter set would fark up your engine, then why would you have it set that high?

And why did it take 2-4 seconds of him reving the crap out of your car before you slapped him?

It sounds like he didn't do any "imediate" damage to your engine. So sleep tight.

And change your oil.

What exactly do you mean by "immediate??" Now I'm starting to get worried. Other than that, thanks for the replies.

If it seems fine like you said and you don't hear anything funny, I wouldn't worry about it.

I also thought it was odd that he had it bouncing on the limited for so long. Anywho, you'd know if you bent a valve....the car would run funny. I wouldn't worry about it.

It's the mechanical overrev's you need to worry about. Bouncing off revlimiter typically isn't harmful. (Even considering your raised rev-limit.)

Don't worry. "ThePunk" is right. The only thing I mean by that is the fact that the higher you rev the more strain you are putting on your valves, rings, seals, springs, basically the entire engine. Since this was a one time thing and your not bouncing you rev limiter everyday, there should be no problems. The B16 is a high reving engine anyway, just don't make a habbit of bouncing it.

Thanks so much for the replies. I think I could sleep a lot better now. The moral of this incident is... DO NOT let other friends drive stick unless you have seen him or her actually drive it.

haha, funny moral. i let my gf drive my h22 accord. she can drive an automatic ok, but she told me that if i dont let her drive every once in a while, she'll take my car away. haha. she can drive manual ok, her only problem is getting out of first and she shifts kinda rough. oh yeah, my car doesnt have power steering, has an act street clutch with extreme pressure plate, so she cant park it either. sometimes you have no choice whether you let someone else drive your car.
