Telling the year isn't hard; on the input shaft (where the transmission engages the clutch and flywheel), there are teeth or "splines" that engage the clutch disk. The '88 transmissions have 21 of these splines; '88-'91 have 20 splines on the input shaft.
Now, just a little further out at the end of the shaft is a smooth cylindrical surface where the shaft goes into the flywheel's pilot bearing. On the '88 transmissions, the end of the shaft is smooth - just a cylinder sticking out past the splines. On the '89s, there's a single small groove cut around the end of the shaft (less than 1/16" wide, and not deep at all) about 1/2" in from the end. On the '90 and '91 transmissions, there are TWO grooves cut around the end of the shaft.
For figuring out if it's an Si or DX transmission, you'll have to figure out the final drive ratio (the only difference between the two transmissions; the 1st-through-5th gear ratios are identical on Si and DX trannies - only the final drive is different). For that, use the "spin test"; 88CRXDX linked to a page that shows it, on the thread he linked to just above...
Hope that helps sort it out.
