voltage regualtor location

i got a 98 bb6 5th gen. i neeed to know if the voltage regualtor is located in the alternator itself or if it is separate?

It's internal to the alternator.

the problem is that when the car runs, the voltage is around 12.0 nad when i shut it off or stall, it instantly falls to around 9.0 or even lower. So in order to strat my car , i need to jump it everytime i turn the key.

Sounds like it could be a battery. Go to autozone and have them run the tests on the alt and batt. Could be the batt not holding a charge, or it could be the alt not charging.

New battery and new alternator put in about 3 weeks ago. I checked the connection on the ground wire that bolts to the alternator, nad it seems to be melting away hte rubber outer cap. im gonna go clean up the connection tomorow. any other ideas?
