Default ZC SOHC vs ZC DOHC

I have a 90 dx with a SOHC ZC. Is it worth it to swap the SOHC ZC out for the DOHC ZC?

well in my opinion...no althogh the engine has about 12 more hp and maybe looks cooler the added weight of the DOHC will not make up enough for 12 hp

If I could do it all over again, I'd go SOHCZC just due to the fact I could swap on a VTEC head and a cam and make more power and do it a bit cheaper. And I just don't like the fact if I get pulled over and a cop see's that motor he'll right away know It's not legit. Although I had been pulled over with a friend who had a SOHCZC, got hood checked, and the damn doughnut eating fool said it all looked fine. Go figure :/

You make it sound like it's 800 lbs heavier. It's not much heavier at all.

Still, it's not worth it. You'd be better off turboing the sohc zc.

SOHC ZC is rated at best 120ps, which is about 118hp. the extra HP could be contributed by the cam, exhaust manifold and ecu. so just swapping the engine without the (complete) exhaust manifold or ecu may not buy you the 10hp difference from the 90-91 A6.

if youre going to buy a SOHC ZC, just get the cam. cheaper anyway. i wouldnt pay $350 for the engine when i can just get the cam separately for less than $100.

i wouldnt make the arguement the SOHC is better than the DOHC on a weight comparison. the differences cant be that much to overcome. but i would make an argument that SOHC wins in cheapest value. i think good DOHC are hard to find and far from the cheap price paid 5 years ago. there seems to be a lot of SOHC ZC coming off the boat lately, just make sure youre getting a later model MPFI, not a carbed engine.

A 2174 pound 1991 CRX SI would have to weigh at least 221 pounds more with a DOHC ZC for the swap not to be worth the 12 extra HP. And I KNOW that going from SOHC ZC to DOHC ZC is not going to increase weight this much. Hell, even going H-series doesn't. Of course, whether it is worth the money may be another issue altogether. But based on HP vs weight alone, an upgrade to a DOHC ZC is worth it.

If I were to turbo the SOHC ZC how much boost could you run on it?

stock it can handle ~220hp on a daily basis prob ~240hp occasionally at the track
if you are going to run stock internals you should at least give it a re-build

DOHC - 113kg - 249lbs

If you've already got a sohc zc....I, personally, don't think another engine swap just to gain 10 hp would be worth the time/expense.

What's your motivation for swapping...more power? sohc worn out?

SOHC ZC NON VTEC (D16A6) is a great engine to start with.
I'd upgrade the tranny if it's not and Si.
DOHC ZC pulls 6-7K where the SOHC ZC starts to die at 6K

once again, the SOHC ZC non-VTEC is NOT the same as the D16A6.

its very similar, but a few key differences mentioend above.
