Default B20Vtec knocking problem! Please help!

Alright, well here's the basics built the motor with used rods pistons and crank. fresh hone on sleeved block with new rings and new bearings. motor ran fine but right when I would start it up when it's cold i'd get a sound from the motor like it was starting dry with no oil, then it would clear up and sound perfect within 2 seconds. When the motor would warm up and idle my oil light would flicker with idle, i bring rpms up and the light goes away. So I start driving it and taking it easy and it would run and pull great. Then after a little bit of driving the motor doesn't want to pull or go anywhere, like something is holding it back. Then I notice a knockin noise, so I get it home and let it idle at my house and rev it up to like 1500 rpms and the knocking gets louder. So I shut it off and end up pulling the bottom end apart to check the bearings because my builder had said something to me about one of the rods showing heat wear. I check all the bearings and all of them look like they wearing in perfectly except one main bearing has two very very small scratches in it but there are no marks on the crank journal. and I can just bearly feel them with my fingernail. oil pump does not look new when it was supposed to be replaced. any suggestions or comments would be greatly appretiated! Thanks!

sure the knocking is coming from the head..
and what internals did you use. sometimes pistons slap alittle when they are cold

bump

I doubt the knocking is coming from the head, but like I said i'm kind of puzzled about it because after a little while of driving the car would become hesitent and not drive anywhere the same as it was when it was in the beginning of the drive, and that's when I noticed the knocking and such, then I got home and did as I said in the first post. Thanks for the reply and feel free to add if needed.

can't check oil pressure with the motor apart...and out of the car. but if i'm correct even if I would have checked oil pressure with a bad bearing oil pressure wouldn't be right either way whether it was a bad oil pump, bad bearing, or any other oil problem possible...right?

A little cold start piston slap would not be abnormal with forged internals, though it would also not go away within 2 seconds. Sounds like what you described, an oiling issue. Have you taken your pump apart? Cam timing good...? No jumped teeth or slipped gears?

I took the oil pump apart and all looks good, nothing broken or abnormaly worn. I'm still going to buy a brand new one and see how that goes, but when we were first starting the motor the exhaust cam gear slipped but it never ran like that. we fixed it and the motor started and ran great. But like I said after a little bit of driving the car would seem like something was holding it back. Right now the motor is torn apart from the bottom up and it's basically just a longblock with the oil pan and bearing jounals taken apart. What i'm thinking of doing is buying a new oil pump and dropping the long block down in the engine bay and hooking the starter up to it with no tranny or anything and starting it to see if it still knocks. keep the suggestions comeing anything is help!
