Hye peeps, last night i was going home late like 1am and im about to turn on my street a cop sees me, does a u-turn and pulls me over. He aske me for the ususal license, ins, reg, and all. He then comes back and tells me hes going to give me a fix it ticket because i have an exhaust and he says ANY exhaust is illegal in the state of california. I have a 98 ex auto, AEM shortram, high flow cat, and a carbon fiber straight through muffler. Its pretty quiet and i bet less that the 95db limit. Isa there anything i can do other than just put my stock muffler back on and then put the exhaust back on later?? what have you all done in this situation? please let me know and if only cali people respond it will be much appreciated, because only cali people have the same restrictions on their cars as i do. thanks and God bless.
that cop must be bored
not all exhaust are illagal
just go to court and let the judge handle it
they will probably make u test how loud it is
if the muffler is loud heres a link to take care of it

when i got a ticket for my exhaust the ticket came in the mail and said gross polluter so i put the stock one back on took pics and smogged it then i went to court prepared and it got dismissed
yah **** the cops here.... i have been pulled over for that shiet many times. i dont care i didnt spend 200 for my exhaust for nothing.
anyways heres what u do...... make friends with one of the cops in your area ( trust me it works ) then everytime you get a stupid ticket like that just go to the po po station and ask for him and tell him the bs thats going on and usually they will right it off

in my experience i just put my silencer in and my stock intake and when i went to pay for the ticket a cop asked me to rev my car and he passed it, its no bigy , I was scared they were going to make me change my exhaust but no. And besides it was only like 10.00 for a fix it ticket.

in cali its not the exhaust that gets you a ticket its the amount of sound desibles that does. And cops that are haters couse i got one when I was stoped at an intersection and a cop passed by me, stared me down and did a u turn and folowed me for a block ******* hater.
Cop must be board or something. I have never been pulled over for an exhaust or gotten a fix it ticket and Ive had my car modified for a few years. What kind of exhaust do you have. I know some you can get a db rating document that you can present in court and show them that it was within legal db rating.
go to the company were you got it from and ask them to give you prof that it is legal and take it to court. when i got mine i jus payed it cuz mine is 5zigen. goodluck.

well my friend and i got pulled over for speeding and he has a new muffler and just some custom welded pipes and the cop didnt even say a thing here but we live in a small town with big town cops so i guess they dont really care about it around here.

I bet it sounds like a lawnmower running an open header.
Get over it, its a 4 cylinder, if you put a "free flow cat" (ie: a hollow pipe), no resonator, and a "straight through muffler" (ie: hollow pipe), your small displacement inline 4 motor is going to be loud, and sound gay as hell, theres no way around it.

ive heard that if you get a ticket for noise violation, sema will help you out. Not to sure of the specifics, but i know i read if you received a nosie violation ticket, they will perform a sound test themselves, and whereby, if you pass, they will issue a certificate stating you passed noise pollution codes, and courts will honor that, at least in ca anyway.

thanks for all the replies but most of you are wrong. I have a AEM short ram, magnaflow/carsound hig flow cat, stock piping all the way back to a straight through muffler. No bigger pipping, stock resonators, and all. Its actually pretty quiet and not loud at all until i floor it. Im sure its less than 95 db. The only reason that he pulled me over is because it was late at night and there was no one else to bother at the time. Any more ideas, where did some of you go to get it tested??thanks.

Probably not as loud as my lil bro's pocket-bike with DIY CAI.
I don't understand the point of CF mufflers. And I hate loud exhausts (including mine). I wish there was a muffler that gave you minimum restriction with stock noise.

SEMA thing is that all the manufacturers are agreeing to a certain standard DB limit that an exhaust system my comply with. The bill is S.B. 1420
California Bill to Protect Hobbyists From Unfair Exhaust Noise Citations Becomes Law - 2001
Governor Gray Davis signed into law SEMA-sponsored legislation to compel law enforcement to tie exhaust system noise citations to a 95-decibel limit under SAE test procedure J1169. The bill was initiated to address the problem of motorists who drive vehicles legally equipped with modified exhaust systems from being erroneously cited for exceeding noise limits and to remove all conflicting provisions in the law and regulations. The bill still allows officers to cite based on a subjective determination that the exhaust system exceeds the 95-decibel limit. This provision remains a bone of contention and SEMA continues to work with the California Highway Patrol and others to investigate possible solutions.

It's not a perfect situation but at least now you have a chance to fight your ticket.

you're a moron, you have to pay the ticket regardless. if you fight it, and win, they send you a check in the mail refunding the fine.
i got a ticket for my greddy evo catback exhaust in my old '99 ex. payed the ticket then set up a court date to fight it. went to the local community college and had them db check my exhaust. came out at i think 84-85 db. they gave me a nice little shiny sticker to go on the citation and some paperwork. took that into court and it was dismissed, and got a check back in the mail about a week later.
if your exhuast really isn't loud and the cop is just being a dick, then it's easy to fight it.
