Default Nasa at VIR...

I was just wondering if the NASA event at VIR this weekend was a spectator event, meaning "can anybody come". I want to go up and watch a couple of you guys on the track, but don't want to drive up there and get turned away. Is anybody from Charlotte going as well?

--thanks

VIR does not consider this NASA event a spectator event. That means if you drive up to the gate and say you are a spectator, you WILL be turned away. They only allow a certain fixed number of spectator events per year.

IF you know someone who is going to be there, please advise the front gate that you are a crew member. Then come see Elyse (registrar) at Techistration and sign in on that person's page. Oh I would probably let that person know that you will be doing this also.

If you coming to watch and planning to stay the day, you can work during the event. You will learn a little of what goes on behind the scenes at an event, earn credit toward track time at a future event and still enjoy your self.

The weather is supposed to get warmer as the week goes on, which means we will have a great time!!!

IF you decide to work ahead of time, please go to nasaracing.net and download a worker form and fax to Lees Z at 703-250-0184. IT is too late to send a wristband, but the chiefs can be advised that there are more people coming to help.

Look forward to seeing all of you in a few days!

I have never had any issues coming to VIR for non spectator events. I've just had to sign a waiver and drive on in, no questions asked

When did this rule come about, me and my friends had no problems last year, and they would show up at about noon at the track as well.

well, I guess I'm not going to go this weekend since it's not open to non-workers/drivers. I really don't want to chance driving up there for nothing.
Hope you guys have fun. Maybe I'll wait and go to the speedtrial event.

well, i have an invite to the event from Grumpy (wonder if he remembers that) so I wont have a problem getting in. and there are also plenty of people i could "crew" for. its ridiculous they are restricting people from enjoying a day of watching their friends on the track. i'll pay 5 damn dollars to get in if i have to.

I am sorry if this all doesn't live up to what you were used to last year. I don't know if they are clamping down or what the tracks issue is.

All we are is bearer of the word. We would love to have people come out and watch us and their friends enjoy a day at the track. We have offered a way to do so. If you choose to sign in as a crew member you shoudl have NO problem at the gate.

If you choose to help out, you will get in, get worker credit and still get a chance to watch the races and HPDE and friends

Oh. we are having racers from Washington state ( you all know who that is), from Chicago, Georgia. It should be really fun to work and watch.

So there are always options for those who choose to exercise them.

Hope to see you all there!

The rule has always been there. It's an insurance issue (at Summit Point, and I imagine VIR is the same). Somebody has to pay for spectator coverage, if nobody does, then no spectators are allowed. Whether or not the track gate enforces this is a totally seperate issue. This was how it was explained to me.

Anyways, like somebody already said, when in doubt, sign on as crew or volunteer. If you're crew, you probbaly won't have to do much (if anything at all).

If you look at the thread by speedracer33, you will note that he is looking for crew.

Hum a way to get into the track.

See? Options always make themselves known!!!

Thanks MAtt

thats probably why we sign the waiver at the gate, though i never read it i would assume it says (in cliff note form) "if you are hurt or killed at the track, we have no responsibility for it". which i am cool with

The waiver just means the track can't be held responsibile for YOUR actions. If say a grandstand collapses and kills you they are liable - waiver or not. If you don't think this is true then explain to me why you sign a waiver at an autocross and yet most of your entry fee goes to cover the cost of insurance.

If you don't think this is true then explain to me why you sign a waiver at an autocross and yet most of your entry fee goes to cover the cost of insurance.

AutoX insurance is around $120 per day. Any club paying more than that needs to call a better source (K&K or American Specialty). That's not many entry fees at $20ea.

Road course event insurance, on the other hand, is at least ten times that much...

Let's put this to rest.

1. VIR is ALLOWED only so many spectator events per year. This is to make nice with the neighbors. It is not an insurance thing. The proper insurance can always be purchased.

2. Therefore, VIR will use those few dates where they will get the biggest gate $$$$$$.

3. NASA and Speedtrial are NOT going to bring in big crowds (yet). So, they do not get spectator status.

4. If you say you are there to spectate, the POLICY is you will be turned away. It was that way last year, and no different this year.

5.. Some gate guards might interpret this differently, and therefore some got past the gate last year.

6. ALL ARE WELCOME TO THE NASA EVENT. Just say you are there to work as an official or crew for someone. ITS JUST THAT EASY.

Grumpy

PS Jon can comment to the Speedtrial event, (I'll bet he'll say the same thing.)

Slightly off topic...but

Summit Point is just the opposite. To them everything is a spectator event. That's why they nail you for the $30 gate fee. It's refundable to racers, crew and officials, but it's a pain in the a$$.

ALL ARE WELCOME TO NASA EVENTS.Just say you are there to work as an official or crew for someone. ITS JUST THAT EASY. You have to go thru their refund process, but you eventually get in for free.

NASA or any sanctioning organization is at the mercy of the local track policies.

Grumpy

Absolutely agree 100%, thanks Grumpy. All are welcome, just tell the gateperson that you are a worker or crew member... and sign the waiver accordingly.

If anybody has a prob getting in (either weekend), call my cell and I'll come up to the gate to say you are "on my pit crew"

Jon: He's on my pit crew.
Gate: Hell of a pit crew you have this weekend sir... what's this? 30?
Jon: My car breaks a lot... ??

I'm fairly willing to bet that if you drive up, sign the waiver, and act like you belong there, they won't question you. Most conversation I've witnessed at the gate has consisted of idle chatter. Good Luck!
