Default Is this for real? straight cut gearbox?

I came upon this tranny while browsing through ebay, is this legit, or is this guy trying to rip people off. I personally don't have a B series engine, I have an00 lude but I thought this was very interesting considering the extremely short gearing and the straight cut gears.

I believe they are called "dog boxes". Yes, they are straight-cut gears. You should hear them shift. Nothing but grindage in every gear, all the time.

Two gears look to still be helical cut.

I think gear speed offeres straight cut gears.

Something like that is too harsh/loud for driving on the street. Not te mention you will get all kinds of funny looks from other drivers.

yea not sure what it would sound like on a honda, but in my oval window vw bug days.. it sounded really nice. kinda like a turbine type sound. but not sure what it would sound like on a honda.

not sure if mixing gear types is a good or bad thing either...

plus with that over spray, i wonder what other half assed assembly was done.

talk to marauder or spade if you want straight cut gears.. and their local. dont deal with that overseas crap..

Straight cut gears are not as loud as everyone thinks. That set with 1 2 & 3 would hardly be noticable. The real god awefull super turbin sounding gearbox noise comes from a straight cut final drive. The pitch just constatly gets higher & higher the faster you go. If you ever watch rally racing on TV, the in-car cameras w/ sound reveal a hideous whistling noise. That is the ring gears in all three gearboxes singing in harmony...

Dog type engagement gears have no synchros (which are still present in the photo). It's exactly what sport bikes & racecars use in their gearboxes. Makes for ultra fast clutchless up-shifts.

thats just strait cut, dog box's are totaly differant, if you knew anything about them you would never have brought up dog box's.. strait cut gears dont grind, they just wine like a mother ****** when they are in gear... kinda like reverse wines, because its a factory strait cut gear.

If you knew how to read, you would've read that I said:

Read the word "believe".

be·lieve : To expect or suppose; think: I believe they will arrive shortly.

I have only read a few articles on these transmissions. Why I thought those were called "dog boxes".

Reading comprehension isn't your strong point.

Thanks.

Thats the vid I was gonna post, that BMW is loud and fast as ****. The air ratchet shifter is sick as hell too

So can someone explain to me the benifit of strait cut gears?
Stronger? longer lasting?

I believe the position of the camera inthe bmw add's to loudness of the gears, and that is the final drive gear that gets super loud? correct me if I am wrong.

read some more, or ask questions next time, if you say you believe that its a dog box, you will get others to believe thats its called a dog box, no reason to have more false info on honda tech then there is. I'm not trying to be an ***, sorry if i came off like one.

That **** is tight as hell, is that mainly for road racing, rally, etc or is that gear setup also used in Drag applications? I ask this because I've never heard or watched a drag race where the car was wining that bad....

The benifits of straight cut gears are as follows:
More efficent, so less power loss in drivetrain (Helical gears create thrust as they turn).
Cheaper to manufacture...

The downside is the horrible noise...

and cause you can easily customize your gear ratios to whatever your liking

guys, there's no need to buy that assembly when you could get one of these. and make your gear ratios whatever you want (: http://www.jasperengines.com/perf-trans.htm

i'd want my gears to end at 45, 65, 85, 110, 140

and for the curious, that transmission (with 205/50/15s) the gears would end at the following mph when shifting at 8000rpm.

1st - 36
2nd - 55
3rd - 67
4th - 79
5th - 100

60mph in 5th gear = 4800 rpm
70mph in 5th gear = 5600 rpm
80mph in 5th gear = 6400 rpm

1st to 2nd = 2700rpm drop
2nd to 3rd = 1400rpm drop
3rd to 4th = 1200rpm drop
4th to 5th = 1700rpm drop

i personally wouldn't like those ratios
