Default Rear Disk Brake Conversion for my 91 Civic Hatch.

Hello guys. I'm still new into this whole new swap / changable parts. I was wondering, which car would be suitable for my 91 civic hatch for a rear disk brake conversion. Like what would be necessary for the swap. Would it just be plug and play or would there be welding involved? Please help me. From which year would be best for my car also. For front brakes and rear. I've been canyoning on bad brake setup. Just need info and knowledge that you guyz have. Help a brother out! Thanks and take care.

Rear discs from a 88-91 CRX Si and 90-93 Integra's are a straight bolt on affair. No welding or anything like that required. You can also use the ebrake cables. Im pretty positive you can use rear discs from a 92-95 Civic and 94+ Integras but im not positive. Others can chime in if they know different.

You can learn everything by searching. Many of these topics have been covered.

But you can use the trailing arms from DC, DA integras also EG, EK civics. They will bolt right up.

You will need the following

Disc brake trailing arms w/ complete brake assembly
Matching Brake lines
NON ABS 40/40 or 40/30 Proportioning valve from any integra or 91+ civic/crx/sol
The proper E-Brake cables for your car (don't know which ones work though so search)

It all bolts on, and works perfectly. Usually you have to do a complete brake job on them though because brake parts to keep well in a salvage yard (new rotors/pad/shims/retainers/etc)...

Try ImportAutoSalvage.com for parts

This is wat i thought aswell, but there are peeps that seem to think this info. is false. Can any others vouch that all these chassis rear trailing arms/rear disc the same?

What is you location? I just pulled a set with 67,000 miles on them. I have the cables, arms, rotors, calipers, pads, lines, etc. Everything for the rear. Shipping would probably be high, but if you are in Ohio or close, I can help you out. They are really in very very good shape. All bolts came out with a 3/8" rachet. These are from a 90-93 integra.

you can use the trailing arms from all 90-01 integras and 88-00 civics. I am using the rear disk brakes from a 1995 integra on my 89 civic hatch.

you must use your civic/crx compensator arms though (they adjust the toe, located toward the front of the car).

The e-brake cable brackets from the newer cars don't line up exactly, but you can still move them around and make them work. I think I got all but one to bolt up, and I just used a couple of zip ties in that location instead. it would probably be fine without the zip ties though.

the 90-91 CRX rear disk brake assembly uses a smaller spindle size and wheel bearing. This causes it to have a slightly narrower track when bolted up compared to the integras and 92+ civics. its maybe 1/2" at the most per side.

use existing e-brake cables.

All of these trailing arms will bolt up to the ed chassis. The DA setup is the oddball. It uses a larger trailing arm bushing, has longer compensator/lower control arms. I didn't see any differences in the rear upper control arms.

The compensator arms will bolt up, but you'll never get 0 deg toe, so use existing compensator arms as mike-y mentioned.

I've also heard that the DA rear caliper has slightly bigger caliper piston compared to DC, EG, EK calipers. Can anyone confirm?

I'm currently using EF9 front brakes/DA rear discs, ED6 bb/mc. DA booster/master cylinder coming soon.

You will need the ebrake cables from 90-91 integra. The CRX Si ones are too short. Integra ones fit perfect. Dropping the gas tank slightly is necessary for bolting two of the cable ties down (to do it right!).

Did mine right and did not have to drop the gas tank.

when doing this do not use the 90-93 integra trailing arms. these will increase the wheel base, and understeer will be affected.

here is a link i have that will tell you how to do the whole deal ok dude?

I couldn't find any mention of the DA trailing arm increasing wheelbase. That is totaly untrue anyways. If it were a problem, all the people with DA rear discs would pissed because their rear tires wouldn't be centered in the fender when viewed from the side of the vehicle...

I can try to measure to see if that's true about the wheel base. It'll take a while, but I'll make a post if I do.

Wow so much info, and I don't know which one to choose. I'm such a novice guyz. I'll take everyone's thought into consideration and start asking around for clarity and assurance. Thanks alot guyz. This has become more than I asked for. I thought this topic would be just another one of mine... empty and unresponsive. Well thanks!!! I'm actually excited now to do this rear disk brake conversion. Is it advised to change the front rotors and calipers too (to bigger ones, say from an Integra 90+) while getting the rear disk brakes from a DA? Just was wondering. Because if there will be any understeering, might as well keep it to the minimum? Well thanks for the knowledge and help guyz! Thanks alot.

You don't really need larger front brakes unless you swap in a heavier motor. It's all about ballance. This is the reason the D series cars have smaller front brakes in the first place. If you add larger rotors & calipers up front, you actually shift brake ballance forward (adding weight to the front shifts it back). Under threashold braking, too much forward bias causes the front tires to lock up long before the rear tires have reached their full traction potential. What you end up with is lengthened overall stoping distances.

If you do get the larger integra front brakes, it will require you to get a larger master cylinder. The proper size would then be a 15/16" unit that can be taken from the 91 Civic EX 4dr (only), and it will bolt directly to your existing brake booster & brake lines (no bending & flaring). If you use a 90-93 integra NON ABS 15/16" MC, you will have to get the matching booster too since integra & civic MC's have different mounting brackets...

If you measure trailing arms, get the distance from the snoot (where the compensator arm goes) to the center of the trailing arm bushing. Then get a measurement from the center of the trailing arm bushing to the center of the hub nut. If the second measurement on the DA arm is larger than the EF/EG/EK/DC, then it would increase the wheelbase.

I'm pretty sure the DA ones are the same when compared to EF/EG/EK/DC. The only difference I'm aware of, is that the DA trailing arm has a larger diameter traling arm bushing...

It is True.

the wheel base isnt increased from nose to tail, its increased between the rear tires. i bought a 1991 Civic Si and the previous owner used the Da trailing arms. He used the 99-00 EM1 Si wheels before and after. and the wheel tire combo did stick out more. the owner measured the wheel base between the two rear wheels and it was wider than before. it has been over 1 year since i sold the car myself, so i no longer have the numbers. A wider rear track would affect the steering characteristics.

would you even call this measurement a wheel base? This is what i thought it would be called.

It's called "track width' not wheelbase...

the increase in track width would be due to the hub/bearing assembly on the 90-01 integra and 92-00 civic being slightly larger than the 90-91 CRX.

The only issue I would have with using 90-93 integra trailing arms would be that the large trailing arm bushing is slightly larger than all other civic and integra trailing arm bushings, so its harder to find a replacement. Honda sells a bushing replacement for the 88-00 civic (also fit the 94-01 integra) that are pretty much the same as the mugen pieces.

Honda also sells the DA trailing arm bushings (part # 52385-SK7-N02 $46.04 each at SLHondaParts.com)
