VIN info
There should be a sticker on the frame that clearly states the year as well as the vin. If you know which state it was last titled in you could check to see if the dmv has an online vin search. (Florida has a free one on the state's dmv website and it tells basically everything but damage history.)
Good luck.

Oooooo... you know those little VF's catch fire right? I rememebr a few of them catching fire back in the day after they had been out for a couple years, seems as though if they are tipped over they can ignite. they run great while upright though.

Also, V-4 Honda's, almost all of them made before 1985, have a terminal case of improperly hardened camlobes that cause the surface of them to erode. The result is a very noisy, self-destructing engine. The cure is expensive, cams and rockers at least. A valve inspection would determine if this is what's happening to your bike. Just lift the front cam cover as it's the easiest to get to, and inspect the lobes on the two visible camshafts. If it looks like termites have gotten to them, they're shot.
