Don't use a stock cat. You have a good chance of blowing it out. Plus the 2.5" collector going into a stock cat with I'm guessing 2" collector or possibly less is a REAL bottleneck. I have a JDM ITR header on my B16 w/ a 3" CATCO cat. It BLEW me away how nice it sounded once I got it put on. Don't go stock with the cat, you may regret it later.

I've got one with a stock cat and its a bottleneck. I still trapped 4mph higher and dropped 2-10ths off my 1/4 mile time with it

Maybe it could have been better with a high-flow cat? A header will make more power yes, but why not "clear" it breathing passages totally? I'm not saying run open header though...just my 2cents.

high flow cats sound like ***. Id rather sacrifice 5 hp to make it not sound like a goddamn lawnmower. If anyone can prove me wrong do it cus im satisfied with the sound of an ex cat on my stock b16 exhaust manifold

Everyone's idea of "nice" is going to be different. Of course it sounds obnoxious right now, as there's no cat or muffler connect to it. An OEM or mild aftermarket header is not going to have a huge impact on the exhaust note, although it may increase sound slightly. But it definitely won't sound like a lawnmower once you have the piping connected correctly.

Are you referring to a high flow cat, or a test pipe? Test pipes will increase the exhaust note, and usually create a very hollow, raspy sound.

Most people don't concern themselves with the slight sound change, as compared to the more important subject: how much power it's going to allow.

. I didn't have a negative effect when I put my 3" CATCO on. I liked the sound. I noticed that exhaust without a cat or minus a resonator are the most annoying. I don't get a lawnmower sound...mine has a nice deep throaty growl. When VTEC hits it gets really loud. I like it loud though.
