Default Replacing the clutch!

I just put my '89 CRX Si in the shop to replace the worn clutch. I'm short on money and want to know if the quote of $450.00 is too high or about right for the repairs. While it's in the shop should I spring for a racing clutch or replace it with a stock part? Thanks.

replacing the clutch is a bit of work since you have to pull the tranny. i figure its at least a 5 hours job, so $450 doesn't seem too bad.

hmm, wait a second...is that just for labor???

it's average. Most shops will do it around that price.

You can do it yourself and do it for about $200 cheaper.
Why do it yourself? Well, here's why:

Experience.
Cheaper.
You'll know how everything works.
Mechanics might mess up your car.
Cheaper.

If you're proficient, you can do a clutch job in 1.5hrs. Longest it ever took me (first time, handtools, friend helped), was 3.5hrs.

Do it yourself for sure.

I can't believe the crap I see shops do. I know there are a lot of great shops out there, but I see more garbage than I do good work because people go for the cheapest price (which I can understand).

Anyway, you'll know its right, and you can get a good clutch and still come out on top. Plus it gives you a chance to inspect some other things on the car while you're in there. The biggest bonus is the satisfaction you'll have knowing you did it. People who work on their own cars have something to be really proud of in the end (like scars, black finger nails, and dirty garage floors).
