Default 95 GSR, losing 2 quarts a week, what's going on?

Hey, posting for a friend.

95 GSR, 102 k miles. Intake, header, exhaust. Header installed 2-3 months ago, exhaust 2-3 weeks ago. Problem started just a little over 1 month ago.

He is losing 2 quarts a week. No visible oil leaks. No oil left on driveways. There isn't any blue smoke out the exhaust. There is a considerable amount of carbon build up on his new exhaust though, but I assume this is normal on a GSR??
His idle is also up about 300 rpms higher. It idles at 1100-1000 rpms instead of about 800 rpms.
The car is still strong, but it will gradually lose a little power as the oil level decreases.
Oil/filter has been changed since this problem, but the problem is still there.
Oh, he's using Mobil 1 synthetic.

Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks.

check the coolant, it would be milky if oil found its way in there

Wouldn't the engine temperature go up if the oil was leakin into the coolant?
Also, the fact that he probably lost over 4 quarts of oil already would mean that the coolant would be overflowed with oil. Unless there is that much capacity???

I'll check that too. Thanks.

that's true.
oil in the coolant wouldn't cause an increase idle would it?

Where does he do most of his driving? If it's on the highway then it's probably just burning off (blow by). My ITR uses a little over a quart every oil change. I burn more when I do more interstate driving and less if most of the miles are just around town.

Also, for whatever reason more people tend to burn Mobil 1 than other oils, so try changing oils, preferably, something non-synthetic. btw-has this car had sythetic it's whole life or was this a recent change? The reason I ask is, it's generally not a good idea to switch to synthetic after a motor has lots of miles on it.

autometer oil pressure gauge leaking into cabin??? (i have seen this before, emptied the whole motor in a week.) pop the oil cap off when the motor is idleing and put your palm 6 inches overtop, do you feel alot of air and oil coming out??? if there is enough blowby it could be getting burnt in the engine in very small amounts and you wont see it out the tailpipe.

mostly city driving.

no gauges whatsoever. No fuel/oil lines or anything have been tampered with.

Nope actually he might have worn rings alltoghether. You said heavy carbon buildup at the exhaust right ?

Here are some things to check:

1) Bad or shot Catalytic converter
2) Running Rich (formed from unburned and partially burned fuel, and from burning of the crankcase lubricant)
3) Worn piston rings or also ring sticking (usually caused by varnish deposits)

cat is in good condition.

yes heavy carbon buildup. A little is actually ending up on his rear bumper (could it be oil deposits).
Don't GSR's run rich from the factory to begin with just like Preludes?

compression test your motor and go from there, also if you haven't been using synthetic oil since the motor was new I'd switch to regular mobil oil.

carbon deposits on your bumper and idle is fast, you are running too rich, might have a vaccum leak somewhere.

Good luck
