cleaning carbon build up
Does anybody have a method for cleaning up the carbon that sometimes builds up in the exhaust ports and in the header, I know you can use sea-foam to clean up the combustion chambers and pistons but just wondering if anybody could throw in their .02. Also what do you use for cleaning up intake ports when they get kinda gunky sometimes?

I have a head torn apart right now, and would like to know. It will be hot-tanked later b/c I am preparing it for a 3< VJ and a mill. Until then I want to clean it up.
I will vouch that carb cleaner and a brush will clean Pistons, very well.

becauce it bumps up compression. but in the exhaust and intake ports it sucks! </TD></TR></TABLE>
Ok but wouldnt also cause poor combustion. Not burning as much fuel as it could per cycle?

My question is more directed towards when the motor is in the car, still running. I know having a machine shop hot tank it will do the job and I know SEA-FOAM will clean up the combustion chamber but here my situation. I have a fully built GSR motor that I was running on a Mugen ECU for while with 370cc injectors and my at idle was like 12:1 so I know for a fact that there is hella crap built up cause I can see it in my exhaust tip so although I havent taken off my header yet, mostly because im scared to see what there is, I just want to get what I would need to clean the area up so I dont have to be sad for to long, I can fix the problem right away cause my car is tuned now and I wanna go as fast as I possibly can.

While someone is answering his question, answer mine too; about cleaning the head while it is off the car.
I will be hot tanking when it gets machined, so I am asking about before that.

No doubt about that. Thats not my point.

So about the Sea Foam, how is it used? Where do you pour/spray? Where can I get it? I'm clueless about this product but I could definitly use a clean-up judging by my exhaust tip.

Napa has it. Pour 1/3 of the bottle into your fuel tank, use the other 2/3 and SLOWLY inject it through a vacuum source while the engine is running. The brake booster port works very well for this.

Is there any downsides to using seafoam. Never used it but have heard of bad things?

I am not aware of any negative effects from the seafoam itself. I suppose the if you had say some sludge keeping a seal from leaking that it could clean it out and cause a leak per say.. I have used it twice now for engine cleaning with no reported side effects months after using it. One time was in one of my own personal vehicles aslo.
