Battery light on constant but dim while the engine is running. Headlights and dash lights dimming and brightening while driving. Pulsing whine from engine bay while the engine is running (revs related). Does all this sound like my alternator is on the way out?

Also the speedo needle is jumping about (revs related), could this be linked to the above problem?

sounds like your alternator, or you battery isn't charging, or even your grounds aren't connected right, check them

 

The grounds are OK. Could the speedo problem be related to the alternator?

 

the speedo problem from what i have heard sounds like the grounds, but it could be your alternator not charging the battery properly causing it to surge and what not

 

Yeah dodgy ground was my first thought as well. Guess I'll get the wire brush out and check all my grounds, and take it from there.

well check out the alternator and battery, i know you can get the battery checked out for free at most auto places, not sure about the alternator

You're probably better off with a new one (be certain this is your problem), but if you need one from a 1996-98 I've one. That I'll sell out. Any of them should work, it's just the plugs between obdI and obdII are different. Housings are different as well.
