As far as I know, the S1 and J1 are the same thing. In fact, my S1 even has J1 printed on the case. So I am not sure there is any difference at all. The Y1, however, is different. The overall ratio in first gear is quite a bit taller, but the overall ratio in fifth is about the same. So the Y1 is a closer ratio transmission. But the S1 is already close ratio. And the gearing of the S1 is generally considered better. However, the Y1 is the only one of the bunch that is available with a LSD from the factory.

The s1/j1 comes from a integra XSi ..
1- 3.230
2- 2.105
3- 1.458
4- 1.107
5- 0.848
Reverse- 3.000
Final Drive- 4.400

The y1 comes from a civic/crx sir1..And had lsd as an option
1- 3.166
2- 2.052
3- 1.416
4- 1.103
5- 0.870
Reverse- 3.000
Final drive- 4.266

If you get an s1,Make sure it's a real jdm xsi s1 and not the long geared usdm s1..
And to me the y1/w lsd is the best one for performance..Although not the best one for gas mileage..You'll be in 5th gear doing 60mph stuck at 8,000rpm..

The Y1 is the best small spline tranny IMO.
The 1st gear in the jdm s1 and j1 is just worthless, even on a stock horsepower car.

the stupidest thing i have ever heard...u will be at around 4000 at 65 mph...
and by the way the YS1 is the large splined factor lsd tranny...

If your looking for a good cable b series tranny, don't waste your time with any of the models you have listed. The best tranny hands down is the 1992-93 Integra YS1 vtec gearbox. It has the same ratio's as the late model type R's and is less prone for grinding problems. It uses the larger size mainshaft like all newer hydro tranny's.
Oh, the best part, if you need a new part for it like a syncro or something, all parts can be had over the counter at the local dealership. All the other jdm tranny's are a no go as far as rreplacement parts.
The JDM Ys1 can also found with an optional LSD as well!

When you take off from a light and have to shift before you get halfway accross the intersection, i'd say thats a pointless gear. Not usefully in your average CRX or Hatch. It had its place in the slightly heavier XSI integra. I used to often take off in 2nd gear when i had my J1.

Not to mention trying to launch at the track.

the 1st gear in the j1 is awesome imo. if you know how to launch properly that thing whips off the line pretty damn quick for a front wheel drive.. even from a slight roll its kick ***. but of course im talkin from a racing stand point. daily driving that thing on the highway is a major pita..

hey guys, need parts for your burnt out jdm tranny's? check
http://www.gear-speed.com/home.html

not only do they sell any replacement part for those tranny's not found over the counter but the carbon coated syncros are hands down the best upgrade to do while your doing a rebuild. I've replaced all of mine in my J1 and no more speed-shift grinding ever again.

YS1 is the best Cable tranny hands down.....Only with a Ys-1 would you get the gear ratios to hang with s2ks on the freeway... And rip up gs-r /ITR driven correctly with some mods the tranny will do the rest.....hehehehe

I think I see where he's coming from. First gear is so short that traction is nearly non-existant. Even with just a B16A. If you are using this transmission on a B18C, launching without wheelspin is next to impossible.

Okay, So from reading all the info (and Thanks!!) I will be getting the XSi transmission from a 92-93 integra. I was looking at hmotorsonline and they have the 92-93 XSi integra B16 motor for only $200 more. I just have to wire the car for OBD1.The XSi motor should have that YS1 tranny, correct?? Is this motor (XSI B16) better than the Sir B16???

i have a ys1 on my b16 in a crx and i figure shifting out of first at 35mph is not useless.
yeah, it's not like a corvette or something that holds first until 50 or 60mph, but...

OK, all the crap people talk about high revs on the highway:
like i said, i have a b16a w/ the short-geared ys1 and it spins pretty high rpms at california interstate highway speeds. but, i still get almost 35 MILES PER GALLON.
so what is the big deal? i don't see why people make such a big deal about the highway rpm's. it is a vtec honda. it is designed to rev high. it only uses the vtec high cam lobe if you are accelerating. it gets excellent fuel efficiency, even with the short gears.

Sweet thanks for the info. I was wondering about that (highway RPMs).
