Default fuel pump help!!!

Ok i have a d16z6 in my 1990 CRX HF, i stayed obd0, so i have a obd0 intake manifold and all of that. What is happening is: Every now and then when i try to start my car it wont crank, it will just turn over. When i turn the key on i can sometimes here the fuel pump, and sometimes i cant. When i cant hear the fuel pump thats when it doesnt start (of course) What would be causing the fuel pump to work sometimes, and not the rest of the time? Also, when i do get it to crank, the motor sputters really bad, and it smokes also (it never use to smoke until this). And also when im driving it, after awhile, my check engine light will come on, and its the codes for o2 sensor. Im thinking that the car is running REALLY lean because the fuel pump isnt pumping enough and it is setting a check engine light for the o2 sensor. I have a fuel pressure guage hooked up to the fuel filter, and it is reading 40PSI at idle when i can get the car running. When the car wont run, and is just turning over, the pressure reads 0PSI. Oh and i have an adjustable FPR. Is my fuel pump going out on me? OR what is going on?

Have you changed or added gas since it started. It mat sound crazy but you may have bad gas in the car. Or you could also have a main relay starting to go out on you. Usually if a fuel pump is out, then its completely out.

i'd do a normal tune up if you haven't done so. plugs , wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter. do all that and then i'd replace the pump. it's a pain in the *** but i did it by myself in a couple of hours. the intermittant way it's acting is very suspect of the pump or the wiring. might check the solder in the main relay also.

my fuel pump is doing the same exact thing right now. i let my car sit for a week. and it wouldn't start. so i turned the key on and off over and over for a while and i finally got it to start. it runs but when i shut it off it is really hard to restart. but as a week has gone by it has got a lot better. i still think there is a problem with the fuel pump or relay.
