KUHMO 712/Sumitomo HTR Z/RE010
How do these two compare to each other.I want a sticky tire that will last. I was wandering if I would have the soft sidewall complaint of the KUHMO's if I ran a 205/40/16 on a 16" wheel which I have often heard of the 15".
My friend has the 712s and they squeal like a stuck pig.
Traction is a big disappointment compared to the RE010.
I think the best street tire is either Toyo T1-S or Dunlop SP9000.

I had the Sumitomo HTR Z on my old car and i thought they were awsome but the old car did not have the power of my ITR, but i have been thinking of trying them next after my Yokohama A022 run out of tread and the stock RE010 were the best so far.
A022 are stock size and make ALOT OF NOISE and i don't like they way the slip around turns even thought they have the same rating as stock.
The Sumitomo HTR Z are going to be in my price range next time which will be in the mid summer and then ill let ya know what i think of them.
Not much help that I re-read it but just some thoughts...

Reallly no such thing as a sticky tire that will last. The more traction you have, the less life you have...it's a pretty direct relationship. If you want a good sticky summer tire, the Falken azenis is great, and it's pretty inexpensive so even if they wear out in 10,000 miles you're ahead of the game.

I'm with mike k on the kumho 712's, they are slippery as hell. The only good thing about it is its a good tire in the rain but since I don't drive hard in the rain it doesn't really matter to me. I'd say they grip almost as well in the rain as they do in the dry. I went from yoko avs intermediates to the kumho 712 and that first week of having the kumho's on were scary, i kept forgetting that I didn't have the avs's anymore and kept entering turns way to hot for the 712's. I'd go with the azenis.
Has anyone else OWNED a pair of Toyo T1-s?
If so, how do they compare to the Azenis?
Reason being, I don't mind forking over the extra cash for the Toyos, because I know they perform well.
If the Azenis is as good as you guys claim, I might be interested in trying a set.

I am running the 712s and have run them on the track, too. They do squeal like a pig when pushed, but for the money, I have no complaints. In the sizes I needed, these were half the money of anything else. I will be going to something else, probably Azenis, for track days. In 205/50-15, there are plenty of good choices.
I have 205-50-15 TI-S on my car now and I will never own another pair of Toyo's. I had S0-2's before and loved them. I will either go with a S0-3 or A032.

I ran sumitomo HTRZs and loved them, very progressive and lasted me about 15k of daily driving and 4 track sessions. The grip isn't bad for the $$$.
when pushed cold, there was some moderate squel (typical of most street tires), but when the tires warmed up, they were pretty quiet. Also, there was very little tread block squirm. For the price, they are probably one of the best performing tires. Be sure to get the HTRZs, not the HTRZIIs

712 has it values. see my evaluation of them on the track:

but for 15's with Azenis and S03 onsale at tire rack, I wonder why people keep on looking "lower performance' alternatives for?? HTRZ/712 are decent tires, but they aren't cheaper than Azenis/S03 in 15's.

I'll be ordering 205/45/16 Sumi HTRZIIs for my GS-R in 2 weeks. Seems like a steal for $79 each and from the reviews at Tire Rack, I'll try them. Plus, a friend of mine with an NSX has them (17" front, 18" rear) really likes them.
If I don't like these, I'll try 215/45 Azenis next time.
Almost forgot, Toyo T1-Ss are great I've heard too.... I just can't justify spending ~$135 per tire for my $6000 car.
Too bad Potenza S03's aren't available in 205/45 either.
