Default glitter...normal in oil???

i have a rebuilt motor that i just put in my car. i just changed my oil and i have 65 miles on the motor.

i did notice some glitter/shavings in the oil. is this normal for a freshly rebuilt motor? i think i read somewhere that there will be some glitter/shavings for your first couple of oil changes, but want to make sure.

thanks

Yes, normal for break in... Thats why you want to do several quick oil changes until there is no more metal.

Get an oil plug with a magnet on it. It will pick up any shavings.

On a freshly rebuilt motor, the magnetic oil drain bolt is useless. It will catch some, but not all.

they look kinda bronze, but its hard to tell cause they are in the oil. the oil is still very clean. how long should this go one for?

i changed my oil at 65 miles on the motor and then again at 102 miles on the motor.

thanks

Clean the oil from the shavings and then let us know. Bronze is NOT the color youre going to want to see.

After my rebuild this was the way my oil was for the few first 100 miles. Every oil change I dropped the oil pan to clean it out. It wasnt much but I was kinda nervous about it.

i tried cleaning the oil from the shavings, but they are too small.

the ones i did get to clean and check, the color was silver.

they look bronze at first, but once you clean the oil off , they are silver...

what do you guys think ............ normal?

i hope so... this glitter/shaving stuff has gotten me worried already and i only have 102 miles on the motor

just put a new oil filter, fresh ND 30w oil, set timing at 16 degress cause it was at 14degrees, and did a compression test... numbers are ~ 200 psi across.

moly rings were used.. maybe they haven't seated all the way yet, i would expect 210psi across on a gsr motor.

i will put 50-100 more miles on the motor and drain the oil again.. hopefully , there won't be any shavings... but if you guys say that i should be fine and this is normal.... then i should be good to go

thanks

yes glitter is normal, kinda floats on top of the oil, ususally Assembly lube an/or where the block wasn't copletely clean.

a properly cleaned/prepped block shouldnt have any metal shavings in it at all, however keep flushing and you should be fine. the only thing i would worry about is oil pressure incase the shavings collect on the pickup tube screen. try to clean the block out better if you ever rebuild/build another motor.

It doesn't matter how well you clean the block. The metal shavings in a freshly built motor result from break-in of the parts. Especially the rings.

i really hope you dont have visible metal shavings from your internals. maybe real small (not noticeable shavings) but not glitter sized. he probably seeing metal from the previous machine work. block needs to be cleaned better. IE all the oil passages, crank journals, etc. needs to be perfect or you will see glittter in the oil.

Glittering oil is COMPLETELY normal for a brand new engine on its first oil change.

first oil change only?

i changed my oil at 65 miles on the motor and then at 102 on the miles. the second time i still saw a little glitter... silver in color and very small.

i was planning on changing the oil every 100 miles till i see no glitter.

yeah.. if you wait it out the 500-1000 miles, then after that oil change i would think you wouldn't see anymore glitter

not sure if you change your oil every 100 miles on the freshly built motor.

any opinions?
