Does anyone have any tips on removing the pistons/rods without removing the crankshaft? Once you remove the nuts from the studs should the bearing caps just separate, and then you push the piston up through the top? Any help would be appreciated. Trying to get this done tonight.

A.) do it right or you'll regret it
B.) yes, the bearing caps should split with a little rubber mallet action after you take the nuts off, although they're on there pretty tight, so don't get upset if they don't open right up for you.
C.) if you already have the bottom of the engine open, why not just take the crank out and do it the right way?

 

you do have to take the head off the engine!!!

I did take the head off. I just needed to get one piston out to see what all I need to order (just rings or new piston as well). Went smooth though, thanks for the help. I'm in a time crunch or I'd take the crankshaft out. I'm going to have to take it out to reinstall the pistons anyway, just had to know what to order before I go out of town.

if you can take pistons out of block without removing crank you can put them in also!!!



no need to pull crank unless you have bad main bearings

 

Just figured it'd be easier pulling the crank. Maybe I won't then

 

lol...my question here is how do I take out the oil pan? seriously! I am looking to swap my pistons too and been working on it for days! cant take the crank shaft out too! EEK need help fast!

if you dont know how to pull the oil pan then you shouldnt be thinking of messing with your pistons because it will just end up costing you big money

(But you take the clutch plate off first, then you can drop the pan).
I cant imagine pulling the crank with the engine in the car.

If I end up pulling the whole crank it'll definitely be with the motor out. Looks like I'll have a while to think about it while I save up for new rods/pistons

And as far as taking out the oil pan, it's really pretty simple, just get under the car and remove the nuts and bolts that are in the way of it coming down

 

Not sure if this is a really big deal on the Honda engines, as I haven't rebuilt one before, but on most engines it's a good idea to use a ridge reamer on the top of the cylinder to be sure the piston comes out easy.
