Default itr pistons worth the trouble?

Right now i have itr pistons and bc 3+ cams with cg just waiting to be installed in my car. I been doing some research on piston install and it seems either a long and detailed process to do myself or a expensive one to have a machine shop do it. I have a limited time until i start school so i was just thinking of just installing my cams and just calling it a day until next summer. Are pistons worth all the trouble?

what bottom end?

regarless though, if youre pressed for money, and in a hurry, andnot completely confident on doing the work yourself, why tear into the bottom end and risk not having a running car at all. just my .02

Yes, the compression you will gain with those pistons will be worth it

yeah but depending on how mechanically inclined he is, he could pay as much as like 1500 to have itr pistons installed, and at most hell gain is 15 hp. 100 dollars per horsepower isnt too great.

Just put cams, tune it and call it a day till next time. And if you do lose to people, just be like you're lucky i don't have my pistons in yet ; ), just playing but seriously though, you're ganna have to take out the whole motor, get the block bored out so it can be fresh and then install the new pistons. That's bore and hone motor, remove and replace pistons, new bearings, and hot tank at the machine shop already. So yea....if you have the money then do it but if you don't, just wait till you have money then do it.

Haha... I wouldnt run BC3+ Cams on a stock GSR CR even tuned.. Its not worth the time and money..

Wait till you can do it right and not lego build..

The BC3+ can work well with 10:1 compression, but until the pistons will end up making a world of difference. If you disassemble the motor yourself and have a competent machine shop nearby, then it's very possible to only have about a week or less downtime on the block.

this can be done in a day depending on the condition of the cross hatch on the sleeves or if there is taper on the bore.

ive done this a couple times, motor still in the car.

you dont even have to hone most of the time if the motor was well maintained, the FSM specifically says it isnt always necessary to hone when dropping in new pistons and factory piston rings.

yeah he wont gain much peak horse power, but he will improve the midrange power. I think its a good idea. good luck!

yeah i meant 15 hp all across. my buddy had a b16 with basic boltons and did like 150 or something. he swapped his block for a type r and made only like 170, but it was an increase across the whole rpm band

With some more thinking, i thought if i had the bottom end out i might as well get other things done to it like micro polish crank, balanced and some other odds and ends. Too bad my time does not allow me to have my car down for to long. I think i might just put the cams with the valve train in and wait till i have more money so i can properly build the bottom end. thanks for the advice so far!!

I was thinking of something similar for my b18c1 as well. BC3+ with jdm itr cams. Is it worth it to get oversized? Is there a lot more labor involved?

just out of curiousity what should i be paying for a hone, hot tank, and itr piston (stock bore) to be installed on stock rods.

depends on your area and also what kind of shops you have in your area. I got my block bored-honed and hot tanked for 90.. honing was done on a sunnen.
