shaft install
Im lookin to get some toda billet vtec cam shafts for my 01 GSR. I know i need new retainers and springs for this mod. My question is how hard is it to install camshafts? Can anyone do it or would it be smarter to pay a pro to do it?
pretty easy... but make sure your at TDC.
take off you wire cover bolts and wire cover off, and ground.
pop off all your spark plug wires and set them to the side over your intake.
remove your valve cover bolts and valve cover.
sigh, and maybe take pictures, if you've never seen the inside of you head***
loosen all first then remove bolts over the oil passage rails. 26 total.
loosen your dizzy and slide it out a bit. and remove your timing belt.
remove your cams from the vehicle. keep them in a rag, and occationally lube them up. you don't want them to rust if your gonna sell them.
take of the cam sprockets (gears) and don't loose the key!!! looks like a little see-saw.... yyayy see-saw and remove your cam seals.
bolt on your new cam shafts to the gears. don't forget the key, washer, and cam seal. i'd recommend new cam seals, but it's not nesessary.
put back into the car carefully, making sure the seals line up. some try to put the belt on now since you can easily slide the cams under the belts position.
put the rails back on and tighten the 26 bolts back on. your gonna have to ask around or check the manuals for the torque specs since i forgot them.
hard part now is the tensioner and the belt but unless you did the belt in step10. and slide the dizzy over and bolt it tight. timing is not gonna be right on but it'll be enough, since you do need to break in the shafts and retune anyways... recommended.
put the valve cover on with the gromets that fell out, as you tipped the valve cover over, with a brand new valve cover gasket/seal... highly advised. because as we all kno, using an old valve cover seal/gasket is like reusing a condom.
spark plug wires on, cover on, and ground back on....
sigh of relief... you deserve a cookie!!!!!
