Need diagnostic help with 98 Accord
I have a 4cyl 98 Accord that I thought had tranny problems. Mainly slipping on 1-2, banging on 2-3, and not downshifting properly. Did the tranny fluid change (3 times) and nothing. No codes. No flashing lights.
Took it in to the tranny place and the guy is real careful and wants to make sure it is the tranny. (He doesn't want to pull it and rebuild it and find that it still does the same thing.) He has found a throttle position sensor code that he says may affect the line pressure in the tranny. Problem is that you can't replace the TPS, you have to do the whole throttle body at $350 just for the part.
Anyone have any advice at this point? I'm not sure what to do. The car is driveable, but it slips so much that it is not safe to me.
BTW--Honda said the next step was a total rebuild at about $2500.

It could be your TP sensor, but I doubt it. You do have to replace the whole throttle body to get the TP sensor. But the tranny sounds like it may have an interal failure. If I were you , I'd take it to a dealer and have them check it out.
Thanks. I had the dealer check it out. They replaced the fluid three times, then said the next thing was replace the whole tranny. They want $2500 for a rebuild. The guy I went to is a very reputable tranny shop here and he will charge about 12 to 1500 for a rebuild.
BTW--What is the tcu and does it affect the tranny in this model?

How hard is it (how much time) to put on a new throttle body?
Any ideas where to get one? A lot of the internet part dealers seem not to have any.
Thanks.

try to drive slower, it helps a little bit when the tranny shifts. Or you can shift it yourself with your feet. Try to learn your shifting points and when you feel a shift comming, let go of the gas just a little the rpms well drop when it upshifts.
when you try to pick up speed at a faster rate the tranny will downshift badley if your tranny is going out and meight not catch the gear and your going to be raving up to 4k or up to 6k.
trust me its a pain when the tranny acts up like that. first to go is 'over drive', then '3rd' and '2nd' and 'first' go at the same time.
one more thing if you come to a stop sign, and you fell the tranny down shifting slowly "EVEN" after you have stop. then your tranny is bad, cuz if you don't let it down shift you will lunch in 2nd, then the ecu with make it shift to 1st and jerk really hard.
if it does those things then its time for a rebuild. im on my secound auto tranny, next time im going manual

The picture's from Majestic Honda (hondaautomotiveparts.com) but maybe you've already checked with them...
It looks like a simple bolt-on job to replace the TB (#5). But remember there's coolant hoses, so at least a partial drain then air-bleed your cooling system. I'm not sure if there's any other stuff in the way. Get a new gasket (#4).
FYI #11 is the MAP sensor, & the TPS is shown over on the side. Opposite end of throttle shaft, from the cable drum. I've heard you can cut slots in the 'rivets' because they're really screws. The grab one from a junkyard & swap the TPS into your car.
Most reputable shops won't like to use junkyard parts since they can't hardly warranty their work. But if nobody has a TB in stock, maybe you can work something out.
I don't know about this fixing your original tranny problem, but if you need a TPS...
After you cut slots into the 'rivets', re-use them since they're really screws. I believe you adjust it by twisting it on the throttle shaft. I haven't done it so ???
Probably use the slop in the mounting-screw holes? Plug it in, turn on, adjust for ??? volts on one of the wires or something like that? If not here, search in the Tech & Integra forums since I've spent a lot of time over there.
Maybe you'll find something about compatibility, too. I think Honda only ever made 1 or 2 types of TPS, so you'll have a wide variety of junkyard cars to choose from.

Thanks. I'm going to go with the throttle body from Majestic Honda--they're about the only place that has one. Then take it back to the tranny shop. $$$$$$$$$$.
