Lightweight Non Adjustable Cam Gears B Series. Anyone Interested?
Recently I been dealing with a local machine shop on a set of lightweight non adjustable cam gears for my engine build. I was wondering if any one here on Honda-tech would be interested in something like this. Because i can have the machine shop make more of them for me, and i will be able to sell them at a fairly resonable price. They will be very light weight (exact weight not sure yet). If you think that you might be interested in a piece like this. Post a reply and let me know your thoughts. If I see enough interest I will have the machine shop make a batch of them for me.
seems to me that the ability to be adjustable would be far more beneficial then it being lightweight. its not like cam gears weigh 18 lbs each anyway.
most light weight adjustable gears on the market weigh in the low 200's, thats plenty light...
I dont think sacrificing adjustability would be worth any additional weight savings :shrugs:

Well i am not really scrificing adjustability just to get alittle lighter. On my last build i had a set of AEM cam gears. I had the bolts torqued to the exact specs that was on the instructions, but after a few months a driving. I guess they became loose, and ended up making my motor blow. all the exhaust valves hit the pistons.

IMO this could be a nice option for people that have built their engines and are done tuning. If the gears are custom then they should be able to cut the keyway plus or minus a couple of degrees and then you could have a fixed gear that will never slip.
With lighter weight serious racers will be interested. 50g weight savings once is not that big but 50g savings 1000 times is.
Ultimately quality and price will determine if anyone is interested.

this is what i would do
get an adjustable gear. measure where the key is every degree or 2 and then make them by the degree of advance or degree of retard.
kind of time consuming and labor intensive.
or jsut make stock lightweight ones and sell them on ebay. if people bought amboy california theyll sure as **** buy cam gears. especially single cam guys.

Sounds like a good idea; however, i was not planning on making a new poduct to sell or anything. i am just more or less trying to see if anyone would be interested in what i had made for myself. Becasue i already had the machine shop make mine, they can just go ahead and make more for me if there was anyone interested

which generation of aem gears did you have?
their new ones wont slip.
look at the golden eagle or a couple other companies. most of those are really light and offer adjustments but still are strong and wont slip
the other thing is, how much do stock cam gears weigh? those seem pretty light.

Well if people are interested in cam gears that are already advanced one or two degrees. I can go ahead and get a set of non adjustable cam gears made already at 1 or 2 degrees advanced. would also be lighter due to not having all those bolts on the cam gear.

I still don't get the point of cutting weight in the cam gears.....does it make the car faster or improve performance?
