custom gauge pod across dash
ok heres the scenario.....i have absoultly nothing in my car ok, but i still have the dash that goes from one side of the car to the other. and i was wondering, if there is anyone whos knows of anyone that has seen this setup and how has it worked out for them and any pictures would help. i would like to, instead of the old fashioned pod on the a pillar, setup gauges across the dash and most likely probably run the gauge wires through the vents since i have to cooling or heating **** what so ever.
can anyone help me id like to do this and get yall on HT's help bc i would only turn to yall for assistance bc everyone else are, well id like to say but i wont
please help, THANKS

well what i was gonna do is use guage pods/cups and mount them across the dash pointed in a slant towards the driver. i too am not a fan of the a pillar pods, and the civic does have the flat empty dash.
The a pillar pods don't do much for me either and I agree, that's a huge expanse to not be using up. Since my car is fully caged and I REALLY preferred to keep my eyes on plane w/ the horizon, a friend of mine and I did (what I think is) a nice treatment for this. We constructed an aluminum box that overhangs the top center vents, runs from instr. cluster to the line past the center section and pretty much stays on plane w/ the top of the instr. cluster top.
Its highest point is at the front and it slants down toward the point where the dash moves up to meet the windshield. The top itself is affixed to the dash w/ tabs and 16 bolts, the front plate also comes out to allow me to get to the gauges easily (tabbed on the inside w/ threaded inserts).
The front is 5 gauges in an X pattern (oil temp, pressure, water temp all 2 5/8ths, egt & trans temp at 1 7/8ths), I put the aluminum through the media blaster and clear coated it so it would hopefully not stain but also not give off a lot of glare. If you ran all 1 7/8ths gauges, you could fit probably 7 all told (and they are close enough to you that the size would not be an issue IMO)> The wiring all runs along the top of the vent box (there is a gap toward the firewall in the dash where you can drill through to nothing) and down the psgr. side of the center console (and in my case it all runs through the firewall through the gromet that normally would house the AC lines).
I added a light switch to the center console for the lighting. I used the multi connector strips (like 16 screws, 8 on each side, connect one side w/ power, plug your individual wires in on the other side ... pretty neat) for power and ground. I really love how it came out and it doesn't really leave the planes of the instr. cluster (top & front & back). If you want, I'll try take some still shots w/ my video camera (don't have a digi-cam

guilt trip!
BTW, the two wires hanging down are not permanent. I am trying to determine w/ my crap cowl where I want the oil pressure warning light (see it above center and right side of cowl). Still not sure which I prefer but I'm leaning toward the right side as it won't need any lift to clear the inst. cluster.
