Default sohc vtec solinoid bad?

so i have a z6 in my 95cx. is it possable that my vtec solinoid is bad? i had a shop check it out so they hooked up a test light and ran it inside the car wile they test drove it and they said the test light came on at about 5100 rpm. so i drive it and can feel or hear no difference at that engine speed. i have i/h/e w/no cat so you'd think i'd be able to hear it when it kicks in. it really starts to scream just after 4 grand but maybe thats just how the powerband works on these motors. is it possable that the test light would come on and the solinoid still wouldn't kick in? should there be an audible difference when the vtec kicks in?

Personaly after driving my 93 SI (stock motor w/ i/h/e) and my 94 b16 cx. The sohc vtec just wasn't very noticable at all, because sohc vtec is only on the intake side so you don't hear it much. As compared to the b16 cx which has vtec lobes on both intake and exhaust you hear the vtec cross-over because of the exhuast usually. If the test light comes on then the solenoid is engaging vtec, I think you are just expecting a DOHC vtec crossover to sound like the SOHC, which isn't the case usually.
