Default Milling head VS milling block deck????

Heres my question, is there any big diffrence between milling the head, and milling the block??? Is one more reliable than the other?

Reason is i really dont want to mill the head. Im going with a na lsvtec right now, and i wanna get a nice p&p but in about 2 or 3 years, i would like to switch over to a boosted setup for my teg, and swap a k into my eg. Obviosly i would like to reuse the p&p head, and therefore i am leaning away from milling off of the head.

Im going to run a ls block with p30 pistons and a b16 head, and id like to move the CR to around 12.0:1. I am looking to take off no more than a total of .012 from wherever i take it.

My question is, has anyone had good/bad experiences from shaving off the block? Is it less reliable that milling the head? Does one vs. the other have better performance results?

Will i have any problems with my pistons popping out of the hole too much with the p30's??? Any clearance issues?

Im sure there are plenty of people who have done this, and a couple of profesional builders on the site so i would reall love to hear all the input i can get!

Thanks guys
---Joe

Joe, there are ppl that run 2 layer headgaskets of course with no problems.

I wouldn't worry about having 12.0 static compression. Forget about that number. If you want to keep your dynamic compression higher, you might as well run CTR cams. Don't worry about the compression.

deck the block=tear down the engine
deck the head=tear down the head

ones alot easier than the other.

i like to deck the block to 0 deck, for the pistons, OR even as far as 20 tho out the hole which would make near 0 deck wit headgasket.

but then again u can gain that quench just by milling the head the same amount

Bumping this after reading some about Omniman's motors.
I was wondering the same thing as the OP as I have a similar build planned:
B16a2 with o/s P30 pistons, Omni valve train and flat top valves, deck block .005 and the head .005. This should put me around 11.0:1. My only worry is if the reliefs will need to be machined deeper in the pistons. I'm planning on running either CTR cams or BC 3+ so nothing with too huge of a lift.
The more I look into it the more I like this idea though; the higher compression aiding in overall power coupled with the relatively small piston domes as not to impede flame travel should make some decent power.
just wondering what the verdict is
