Default Turbocharge the Z6, or B16

Well I was originally planning on Turbocharging the D16Z6... After talking with multiple people and reading different things, it doesn't sound like such a great idea to do a Forced Induction Set-Up on a Z6 with 125,000miles

So my plan was this...

-Exedy Stage I Organic Racing Clutch-$270shipped
-Lightweight Flywheel-$160-$200shipped
-250hp Axels-$300-$400shipped
-GReddy TD04H-15G-$1,470shipped
-GReddy TypeS-$200 or so shipped

... Ok so that's $2,540 or so to be boosting about 7psi, and about 185bhp-200bhp

Decent...

Or... B16A swap:

-B16A Completely Swap-$1,999
-Shipping-$325
-Avid Motor Mounts-$255shipped

So that's $2,579 for an efficient, reliable 170bhp.

So in your guy's honest opinions... Which route should I take?

And in a related subject, how much horsepower does an LS/VTEC and CRVTEC put down? That's probably something I would down the line a bit later.

Thanks in advance,

i would go with a turbo d16z6, i dont like your numbers though, it should be a lot cheaper than 2,500 if you already have the engine....do a custom setup and you could get somewhere in the 1,700 range

if you shop right you could build your d and turbo it and put out around 250HP for that price if you do the work, If you do a swap try and get a GSR, it is better is you are gonna stay all motor, plus if you ever decide to boost, they can hold 10-12 psi daily driver and be a monster

well, with a stock B16 you would be making about 132-140 whp(correct me if i'm wrong) the a turbo Z6 might make around 160-175 maybe a tad more or less but the B16 is way more potent for future upgrades unless you plan on turbo charging the B16 in the near future i'd do a swap like i said way more potential and will be able to reac higher h/p with less cash....if you turbo the Z6 and not plan on spending big bucks afterwards then yeah turbo the Z6

Well... People keep harping on me to just build my own kit... And honestly it's just not something that I feel I want to do my first shot at Turbocharging.

The GReddy TD04H-15G Kit comes with everything needed... Fuel management, injectors, all hosing, oil delivery and return lines, exhaust manifold, turbo, downpipe, etc... It's complete, it bolts in... You can install it in a few hours. For $1,395+$75shipping

It just seems easier for my first shot, that's all.

But this is all beside the point... I'm still deciding between the two set-ups, however I'm beginning to wonder what steps will have to be taken to prepare the Z6 for boost.

-Replace all gaskets?
-Replace pistons and rings?
-Replace all bearings?

Just one last subject... I have a set of D16A6 pistons (Brand new, from Honda) with the rings... Now I can't sell these, and I was hoping there was some way that I could use these in my Turbocharger set-up...

I am aware they bring the Compression Ratio up to about 10.4:1 in a Z6... Now is there a way that I can lower that to the Z6's Compression, maybe a little bit higher?

A6 rods maybe?

Thanks in advance,

boost the z6 and have fun waxing people.. If the z6 blows up you can find another for free on up to $800,00..Always find a spare d series from someone..

Well what I would do if I decide to go with the Turbocharged Z6, is this...

-Buy a spare Z6, and disassemble
-Replace pistons, rods (Shot Peened), bearings, and replace stock bolts with ARP bolts
-Replace gaskets
-Send head out to get 3-angle valve job, honed, ported and polished, and a Camshaft of somesort... Along with some other valvetrain components, I'm not entirely sure yet, I haven't done much research thus far.
-Wait for my existing Z6 to destroy itself, and swap the set-up over.

That sounds pretty solid... And honestly, I'm beginning to lean towards Turbocharging again... Jesus I'm as fickle as a 14 year old girl

D16Z6 boosted = more power now for less money but less upgrades in the future, cheaper to fix.

B16 = less power now for more money but more power upgrades in the future.

personally I would sell your z6 swap for 5/600 and buy a b16 swap WITH WITH WITH WITH WITH the LSD

oh yeah WITH

also skip the motor mount kit if it's going into an eg, get the prothane insert kit and run all 5 mounts or go to home depo and get some black polyurethane and fill your stock ones

The b16 gearing owns the d16, and a stock b16 with the LSD will most likely own your turbo setup from a standing start

it's a really bad idea to boost an old motor as they tend to break when your late for work ect.

Z6 > B series

Z6 less expensive and found anywere while the b is getting more expensive as we speak. I remember a year ago you can get a hydro B16 for well under $2000 from HMO and now they are $2200-2400 for the changeover. IMO its not worth it getting a B series if you are boosting, they both can make 300whp not saying that you want 300whp out of a honda but just an example if done right and the D series can be done for less money.

I have gone both routes, I turboed my girlfriends Hatch with a D16z6 using pieced together things. Used a T25 turbo from a SR20det and FMU and Greddy BOV, and you know the rest. I have a B16A2 Swap in my SOl, and when we raced it was pretty even, but if the turbo d16 was dyno tuned and not just throungh on, I'm sure it could beat the B16. I was running 7 pounds of boost on the D16 and after about 2 months or so, it blew a headgasket but, oh well. I'd say get the B16 just cause in the long run, you can turbo that and go from there. I do still have love for the SOHC

if your worried about reliability get the b16 if u dont really mind changin ur oil often and just generally takin care of the car get the turbo........

b16= less maintenance

i still say the b16 motor is the best building block for these cars....
