Painting a grill will turn out better than something bigger like some side skirts. The way I have painted a couple parts on my car is just with a rattle can.
First clean the surface to be painted and sand it down so everything is smooth.
Then, if needed, use bondo or something to correct any imperfections in whatever you're painting.
Use a primer to form a 'base' coat and allow to dry. You may want to do 1-3 coats of primer, it depends on what you're painting.
Use 3-4 light coats of paint and again, allow each coat to dry.
Use 3-5 coats of clear coat and if you want you can wet sand it to get a very smooth wet look or you can add more clear coat
.
With something like sideskirts I would personally take them to a professional painter that would use a paint gun and what not and can also match the car color. Something like a grill you wouldn't notice much imperfections but a side skirt you will.
Shouldn't cost more than 200 for the pair.
