Default adjusting my timing--confirmiration

my 92 is obdI so from what i've read is that i can just simply retard/advance timing by simply unscrewing the bolts on my dizzy and rotate it?

and to check the timing with a timing gun is by taking out this black plug from the side of the block and shooting the timing light inside the part where the black plug was correct?

i am a little fuzzy on certain areas if you guys can clarify for me please:

the timing light is just an indicator as to what the timing is correct? so how does it know the timing/rpms? and for my car, do i need to jump the service connector or is that not necessary since it is obdI? if i do need to jump it i hear about sticking a paper clip in somewhere but where?

tried going through my helms but cant really find the section where it talks about adjusting the timing... can someone refer to me to that if possible?

thanks alot guys... yah been thru po.com and here but some of those answers couldnt exactly find thanks

ok well when setting timeing you do have to jump the service connector which is behind the radio the same connector you use when jumping the ecu codes.

you are going to aim the gun in the hole on the tranny/block where the black plug is. a picture would really help you to understand. but the is a < closest to you and then a pointer behind it. you have to line up the pointer so it is in the < then you aim the light staight at the flywheel.
you can set your timing by adjusting your dizzy. the reason for jumping the service connector is so the computer doesnt advance or retard the timing while you are setting it.

hope this helps a bit

the timing light has three wire connectors. positive, negative, and spark pulse.

the positive and negative clamp to the battery terminals and provide power for the light.

the third "spark pulse" wire is an inductor coil that clamps around the #1 spark plug wire. then electricity flows through the spark plug wire, the inductor coil for the timing light closes the bulb circuit and fires the light.

there are marks on the flywheel that will tell you approximately what the timing is set to. the timing light will only fire to allow you to see the marks and the pointer. kinda neat the first time you do it!
