Default 97 ACCORD...????

i have a 97 ACCORD...
i was driving and all of a sudden my check engine light came on...and my idle dropped below 1,000...as i hit a few stop lights i had to gas up in order to keep my idle above 1,000 or my car will die...

so i get to work and let it idle below 1,000 and it sputters like its going to die...i turn to car off to see if it restarts and it does and the idle seems fairly normal now...????

any ideas on what to check for...???
a friend of mine said to check my spark plugs/wires...those haven't been changed since i've had the car...

any help i'd really appreciate...thanks in advance...

Checking the stored trouble code would be a good start.
