help/advice/feedback for srs light
Hey all, well ive done a search and found nothing to be very useful. my fiance's 01 V6 coupe has a SRS light on.
as of about 2 weeks ago, her side airbag light indicator kept flashing on and off periodically. I realize that tends to happen when something is placed in the seat or if someone is leaning to the side while riding in the seat. The light will come on and then go off. The light never stays on constantly. This will even happen when nothing is on the seat or no one is sitting in the seat.
Since the light doesn't stay on and I didn't want to take the car to my local dealership and get charged out the ***.... i simply unscrewed the bulb from behind the guages so it can't flash anymore.
However, when i disconnected everything to get the bulb out, replaced the connectors and re installed the guages... the main SRS light is now ON and stays ON. I thought to remove that bulb, but there's no bulb to remove????? anyway, long story short, what can i do at this point to avoid taking it in. I can't see why something would be wrong with the SRS just by removing the side airbag bulb. any help and feedback would be great, thanks

Well...for one, that SRS light comes on to let you know that the airbag has been deactivated because of a unusual weight strain put on the sensor...its completely normal and is not a "problem", it just means something is sitting on the sensor and that the side air bag isnt going to go off while that person, thing...whatever is on the sensor is in the same position...its a safety feature.
You'll notice if you sit too far to the door side of the seat, the light should come on, if you set something heavy (books, box, etc) on that side of the seat or the weight shifts while driving to that side, it will also come on. Its supposed to.
As far as your problem now, i dont know what to tell you, but that light is supposed to come on when an unusual weight is put on the sensor...just letting you know about it.

2 possibilities:
1. Low Battery Charge Can Cause SRS DTCs
On all Honda models with SRS, a battery that’s not fully charged can cause an SRS DTC; and this can be any DTC from 5-1 through 8-6. In Honda service manuals, these DTCs are listed as an “Internal failure of SRS unit,” but low battery voltage can also cause them to set. So, before you troubleshoot the SRS for any of these DTCs, follow these guidelines:
1. Check the state of charge and the condition of the battery. Recharge or replace the battery as needed.
2. Check the charging system, and make any needed repairs.
3. Use the PGM Tester to clear any SRS DTCs, then turn the ignition switch ON (II), and check the SRS indicator:
• If the SRS indicator stays on longer than 6 seconds, check for DTCs with the PGM Tester. If the DTCs are set again, replace the SRS control unit.
• If the SRS indicator comes on and then goes off 6 seconds later, the system is OK.
4. Start the engine with the headlights, brake lights, and A/C on to load the system. If the SRS indicator stays off, the DTC was caused by a battery or charging system problem that’s now fixed. Return the vehicle to your customer.

The SRS indicator is on, and one or more of these SRS DTCs are set:
• SRS DTC 15-1 (faulty OPDS unit or OPDS not initialized)
• SRS DTC 15-2 (faulty side airbag indicator light circuit)
• SRS DTC 15-3 (faulty OPDS sensor)
PROBABLE CAUSE
DTC 15-1
A faulty occupant position detection system (OPDS) unit.
DTC 15-2
• A faulty OPDS unit
• Side airbag cutoff indicator (SIDE AIRBAG; SIDE AIRBAG OFF in later models) is faulty.
• Fuses in certain circuits (such as the odometer) blow or are removed while the ignition switch is turned to ON (II)
• Any part of the SRS circuit (particularly the gauge assembly) is disconnected while the ignition switch is turned to ON (II)
DTC 15-3
• A faulty OPDS unit
• OPDS sensor interference from an electrical appliance operating near the front passenger seatback

The SRS light has been on in my 2000 Accord EX for a few years. I don't recall the mileage - under 50k. I took the car to the dealer when it first went on and was told that I needed a new battery. They replaced the battery and the light went out. Within a few days the light was back on. I asked a nearby dealer about it and they said it would cost a lot of money just to diagnose the problem. I was reading the posts here and got the impression that there is a separate indicator for the passenger airbag. Could someone explain? I also replaced the headlight lamp three times in a short period of time and had some water in my trunk. Is there a connection? I would like to sell this car. Any advice?

What trouble code does it have stored?

The SRS control unit monitors the bulb circuit, a missing bulb would make it fail and set a trouble code.
